I do not claim to be an expert about driver's ed; but I am currently a teenage student of this school and I almost don't know how to put my experience into words, because it is so frustrating.
First off, you pay a combined fee of $350 for 32 hours of classroom, 7 hours of driving, and 7 hours of road observation. Sounds pretty good right? Yeah, it did to me, too, until I found out that more than half of those 32 classroom hours are on the topic of the dangers of drunk driving. I mean, I agree--NO ONE should drink and drive, but they beat the point to death. What makes it worse is that whatever class time is not spent on drunk driving is instead spent on topics such as how to deal at a dealership. Useful information, but nothing I couldn't find on the Internet for free. They taught me nearly next to nothing about driving. They mostly just threw a bunch of (relatively easy) tests at me and then wasted 32 hours talking about stuff that doesn't really matter. I think I can say that I learned more in 5 hours of driving with my parents than I did in the entire class. Also, in the class, the other students wouldn't stop talking and they kept using their cell phones. I'm not using that as a critical factor in the review, because that's not the school's fault, but I felt it should be noted.
I will say one positive thing about the class, though. Getting my learner's permit was an extremely snappy process, and I was impressed with how quickly I had acquired it. Oh, and the teacher has a pretty friendly attitude.
So, for the class, I would have to give a 5.5/10. What about the driving? Sadly, my driving experience with MDS has been much worse than my classroom experience. My instructor yells at me for minor mistakes that are partially his/her fault (gender information omitted), blames me for problems with the car, criticizes personal things about me and my family that don't affect my driving skills, and uses his/her cell phone frequently for casual conversations. I may not know everything about driver's ed, but I do know that a good driving instructor does not use a cell phone *at all* while his/her student is driving, and tries in all honesty to pay as much attention as possible to the road and the actions of the student driver in relation to the environment. It doesn't help that I'm a person of relatively low confidence. All my instructor has done is destroy whatever confidence I had in the first place. I have been affected emotionally by the statements of my instructor.
One positive thing about my instructor--he/she is a nice, friendly person outside of the car, and I do not have anything personal against him/her. However, people can transform in an instant when inside a vehicle, and as a result of this, I highly question the qualifications of my current instructor as both a teacher and sometimes, a driver.
Unfortunately, it gets EVEN worse--the car that I'm assigned to drive at the school has malfunctioning pedals, signals, and brake lights. Parents, would you be comfortable with your teenager driving a car of that condition in TRAFFIC for their first time driving? And possibly with an instructor (I'm only with one of a few) who will blame your teen for car problems? Didn't think so.
All of the flaws I've experienced with this school add up to equal a high potential for disaster. Yet somehow, I've managed to stay on top of it all for five of the seven lessons in the driving portion of the class. I'm done playing with fire, though--I'm shifting my driving times to a different instructor ASAP. My driving experience with this school, however, has been permanently scarred, and I am sufficed to say it deserves a 2.8/10.
A positive thing about the driving--if you enjoy scenery, you may like some of the routes they take you on. I mean, it's nothing dramatically impressive, but there are some fairly pleasant roads they take you on. But be forewarned--with a faulty car and a distracted instructor, your mileage may vary.
