More than 30,000 Pittsburgh drivers have learned to drive safely and defensively with Cindy Cohen School of Driving. We offer defensive driver’s training services designed to teach teens and adults how to drive safely while anticipating what other cars and drivers may do. We focus on educating student drivers both with theory and behind-the-wheel practice.
Our instructors have years of experience teaching students how to become safe drivers. We work with any student, whether they have never been behind the wheel or they have many hours of driving experience. Instructors will teach students how to drive in all types of weather conditions, including snow, rain, and fog (if weather permitting). In addition, we have a system that instructs students on how to parallel park with ease.
Behind-the-wheel training includes:

- School bus safety
- Steer clear law
We offer a certificate for drivers who complete a minimum of six hours of accredited driving instruction and/or a 30-hour online course. This certificate may allow you to receive a lower rate from your auto insurance provider.
Our Services

- Pennsylvania Road Test: Use our vehicle for the Driver’s Exam at DMV
Learners Permit Exam Tutoring: $80 an hour with a 3-hour minimum: This is for students who have NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL in passing their learner’s permit knowledge test, and are struggling to retain the PA driver’s manual information. All tutoring is done at our 3131 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh 15204 office. Permit tutoring is done in a private office that is conducive to learning. *Directly after the tutoring session, we suggest that the student goes straight to the DMV with all of their paperwork/documentation and take the learner’s permit while the information is still fresh.
- Adult/Teen “brush up lessons”: For licensed drivers, advanced lessons, city driving, freeway driving, parkway driving, easy method parallel parking, reverse gear, adverse conditions (rain, sleet, hail, snow), etc.
- Mock/Practice Test Lesson: Step-by-step instruction to ensure that you meet the requirements set by the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles, in preparation for your Pennsylvania Driver’s License Exam. (Click the link above to schedule PA Driver’s License test)
- Fleet Drivers brush-up lesson: For companies who hire sedan drivers/small vans, etc.

Our Vehicles
Cindy Cohen School of Driving has a fleet of cars in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Our cars are maintained and detailed weekly. All cars are specially equipped with dual control brakes and gas pedals so that the instructor can accelerate, slow, or stop the vehicle if needed. We have extra mirrors that provide the instructor and the student with full visibility. All of our instructors can drive the training cars from the passenger’s seat without anyone in the driver’s seat, if necessary. All of our vehicles have a five-star safety rating.

This driving school was great and fairly priced. I have recommended it to many of my friends who need some additional driving practice. I took all of my lessons with Lenny and he was very patient, helpful and did not ever make me feel too nervous. I started from about 7-8 hours of driving experience so I was still quite novice but I was able to pass my test within a month of starting lessons with Lenny (on my first try). Lenny gave very detailed instructions on what the test would entail and the major things to look out for that other students have failed on, but also taught me a lot about driving in general and more complex things that you are not tested on (for example, getting on and off the highway). I was also able to schedule my first lesson within a week of my first call to the driving school after about a month of trying to contact a different driving school. I passed my test which was nice but I also came out of the lessons a more confident, calm and patient driver. Overall this school was excellent and did exactly what I wanted them to and more.

Having just received my license earlier today, I have nothing but good things to say about this school.
From the very first lesson you can tell how committed they are to delivering the best possible experience for their students. I was sent personalized text reminders for my appointments, and staff were always approachable about scheduling appointments.
My instructor (Audrey) couldn’t have been a better fit if she tried. She was helpful and informative, but above all else extremely patient and encouraging about progress being made in the class. Through her expert guidance, I made the shift to a confident, capable driver in record time.
I would easily recommend this school to anyone looking to learn how to drive. Especially those going through a service like OVR - the staff will gladly work with you to make sure you succeed!

I thought I will never drive... And then 2 months ago my husband found Cindy's school online and saw reviews and we decided to give it a try. Now, for this school I only have the best possible things to say. From the first contact with Rusty, trough scheduling process mostly ...with Sue, and than through 6 lessons that I had with Audrey - the very best driving teacher I could even imagine - it was all great and encouraging experience. Now, Audrey, she didn't have the easy task. Apart from teaching me how to maneuver the vehicle, she had to help me overcome my anxiety about "being in the traffic, pretending to now what I am doing while I actually have no clue". And she did. She left no questions unanswered and no driving task uncovered, all while being fun to be around. I came to my driving test fully prepared and confident, and I passed. It took me 6 lessons + one before the test, and I passed from the first attempt. Just. Like. That. Done. I am a driver now. Wow! Way to go guys! You surely made a big difference in my life! I had a negative customer service experience with this business. Because of my personal error, I had to cancel my appointment and incur the cancellation charge. I reached out to give my input on the cancellation policy, which I had not read up on in the disclaimer section of their website that it is the full class fee, not a percentage. I simply wanted to offer feedback that while I was not disputing it, the policy should be made more clear. Cindy contacted me directly via ...phone call and became very defensive. When I explained (for the third or fourth time) that I was not contacting her to dispute the charge she changed from defensive to aggressive. She said over an over again that she didn't know why she was calling me, and that it was in fact HER that should feel wronged by the experience. She left the conversation saying I would not find another school in the area with a better cancellation policy. I have since contacted Roger's School of Driving, who has a clearly more stated cancellation policy which is a fraction of the class price. I reached out to Cindy again to let her know, as my intention is and always was to give constructive feedback. Unfortunately, a month later it still seems the owner if this business isn't interested in any amount of self reflection or constructive feedback to become more explicit with policies and with customer service. I got my driver's license today finally. I went to two other driving schools and did not feel comfortable with them. I took my test twice and failed. I decided to try Cindy Cohen. I definitely made the right decision. I took 1 lesson and then I had my test two days later and passed. My instructor was Freddie and he was the best driving teacher. He was very patient and honest. If I did something I was not supposed to do he didn't get frustrated, he took time to explain what I did wrong. He showed me how to fix it and then told me to do it. I would recommend Cindy Cohen to anyone!

It was a great experience overall. I had four lessons with Freddie, he is very professional. patient, and knowledgeable. On the day of my test, i had a chance to practice for almost two hours before the test. He stressed the importance of coming to a complete stop at every stop sign, checking my blind spots, using turn signals,among other important points. I had zero experience behind the wheel three months ago, and today I passed the road test and also feel like a confident driver. Fred Galati and Dave are tremendous instructors who are professional, patient and honest about my progress. It's not about just passing the test, it's more about establishing good driving habits and mentality. The lessons were educational and enjoyable. Fred and Dave are sincere and genuinely kind people. It had been a privilege working with them.On another note, I admire the way Cindy Cohen School manages the business. They are punctual and responsive about scheduling. I passed my test the first time around, and I thank my instructor, and Cindy for that. My driving instructor Freddy was patient, explained everything I needed to know, and gave me helpful hints that family members might not think about. For example, knowing how many rotations of the steering wheel takes you from all the way right/left to straight comes in handy whenever you're practicing parallel parking. Freddy was easy to talk to and made me feel relaxed behind the wheel. It was easy to contact Cindy and Freddy by phone as well. On the day before my test, I was freaking out; Cindy and Freddy helped me feel comfortable when they returned my calls on their own personal time and talked to me extensively about what to expect on my test.

The lessons are very good, I took lessons with multiple instructors, Freddie, Glen, Lenny and Tim, all of them are great and I learnt a lot. What I like the most is that they take me to the place where I will actually have the exam and do a trial run there, after several practice, I built up my confidence and familiarize what will happen in the test. So when I'm actually taking the test, I already anticipate what's going to come and what will the officer ask me to do, which make the exam felt controlled.

Although it is a little expensive but I would say it is worth to have at least one lesson with the school instructor. Cz the instructors are so professional and expeirenced. They know what is your problem and how to train you to fix it. They would understand the starter's worries and concerns so they will be patient and let you have more and more confidence. As a starter, learn how to drive in a safe and correct way is very very important for me, and Cindy Cohen School did not disappoint me. Especially instructor Mr. Fred, Steve and Ronnie are very patient and professional! Highly recommended. Moreover, Ms. Sue also help me a lot for booking the road test and finding an instructor on an off-day to take me for the road test when all other instructors are not available and I have no other time for road test. When I tell you that Cindy Cohen Driving School is the best, please believe me!!! I went for a drivers test at the Penn Hills Penndot and I was so nervous because of the bad experiences I heard my friends had there. My experience with Cindy Cohen School of Driving was excellent! It was worth every penny! I took 6 total lessons with Frederick Fenner (Freddie) and he was fantastic. I was really anxious about driving and really tense, but Freddie continuously talked me through every step and assured me he would allow me to make small mistakes so that I could learn from them and that he would point them out and correct me but that he would never let me endanger either of us. He explained things that no one else that had tried to teach me had explained and each lesson had a goal and showed me something new to master! I took the lessons because I was desperate to get my license in a timely manner and had a very busy work schedule and they did everything they could to work with my schedule. I took my road test within the time frame I wanted and I passed on the first time! I highly recommend the driving school and I highly recommend Freddie.

I took lessons with Lenny, who always gave great & beneficial feed back that helped me become a much more confident driver. Thank you Lenny. When it came time to take my test, Lenny was not available and I got to take my test with CINDY! I told her going into it that I was really having doubts about my parallel parking, and her goal before my test was to get me where I needed to be. She succeeded! As an adult going into this, my anxiety was very high and I put a lot of pressure on myself. There goal is to ensure that your driving skills are technically sound and safe. I had an international license and reached out to them to help me taking a road test as I had difficulties in the past with taking rental or Zip car for the test. I talked to Cindy, who was extremely helpful. My daughter was nervous when she first got her permit and started driving. I knew that combining an anxious mother with a nervous daughter would not be the best driver instructor/student combination. So, I talked to other parents, read reviews, and found Cindy Cohen. I spoke with someone on the phone at length before scheduling lessons and was reassured that they are careful, patient, and (best of all) love to teach people to drive. We scheduled a number of lessons around my daughter's schedule. She had the same instructor for all the lessons that were booked. The instructor knew what she needed to work on and what she was confident doing behind the wheel, so time wasn't lost practicing what she could do competently. She took her test as soon as she completed 6 months with her permit--and passed easily. My daughter gained tremendous confidence with the lessons, and formed good, safe driving habits from her regular practice with the instructor. Between lessons, she practiced with me in the car, and because she had developed good skills I wasn't nervous as she approached intersections or blind curves in the road. Most parents admit they aren't the best teachers for their kids as the teen learns to drive. Cindy Cohen Driving School is a great choice for those parents and kids.

I'm quite happy with my two lessons so far. Both Clayton and Lenny were very nice and patient. They explained everything clearly and emphasized enough on important but easy to forget parts. When I did something wrong, they just gently told me what's the right thing to do. Their humorousness and easy to go along with character created a relaxing atmosphere, which greatly reduced my nervousness. Really enjoy the learning process. Look forward to my next lesson and would definitely recommend this driving school.

Cindy and her team have been wonderful! I've always had a lot of anxiety about driving but realized I couldn't put it off any longer. I took lessons with Krista. She helped me conquer my fear of driving and being on the road. Krista is very experienced, down to earth, and a great teacher; she helped me feel comfortable behind the wheel. On the day of my test, she picked me up much earlier than my appt. so that we could practice the road test and parallel parking... and I passed my first try! As a suggestion, I would book your lessons WAY IN ADVANCE, as they are often booked. They do have a wait-list and I can vouch that Cindy will actually call or text you back if they have an opening.

Fantastic experience. Cindy rocks. I was a long-time non-driver and when I finally decided to get over myself, I called this school. Cindy talked to me one Friday night when she was supposed to be on vacation. She answered my many questions patiently and gave me some much-needed confidence. Long story short, I took lessons from Cindy over about a five week period. Yesterday I passed my exam with a perfect score. I truly could not have done it without Cindy, who I can't speak highly enough about. I would recommend Cindy Cohen School of Driving to anyone without hesitation. Thank you Cindy!

More than 30,000 Pittsburgh drivers have learned to drive safely and defensively with Cindy Cohen School of Driving. We offer defensive driver’s training services designed to teach teens and adults how to drive safely while anticipating what other cars and drivers may do. We focus on educating student drivers both with theory and behind-the-wheel practice.
Our instructors have years of experience teaching students how to become safe drivers. We work with any student, whether they have never been behind the wheel or they have many hours of driving experience. Instructors will teach students how to drive in all types of weather conditions, including snow, rain, and fog (if weather permitting). In addition, we have a system that instructs students on how to parallel park with ease.
Behind-the-wheel training includes:

- Control of the wheel, accelerator, and brakes

- School bus safety

We offer a certificate for drivers who complete a minimum of six hours of accredited driving instruction and/or a 30-hour online course. This certificate may allow you to receive a lower rate from your auto insurance provider.

- Pennsylvania Road Test: Use our vehicle for the Driver’s Exam at DMV
Learners Permit Exam Tutoring: $80 an hour with a 3-hour minimum: This is for students who have NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL in passing their learner’s permit knowledge test, and are struggling to retain the PA driver’s manual information. All tutoring is done at our 3131 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh 15204 office. Permit tutoring is done in a private office that is conducive to learning. *Directly after the tutoring session, we suggest that the student goes straight to the DMV with all of their paperwork/documentation and take the learner’s permit while the information is still fresh.
- Adult/Teen “brush up lessons”: For licensed drivers, advanced lessons, city driving, freeway driving, parkway driving, easy method parallel parking, reverse gear, adverse conditions (rain, sleet, hail, snow), etc.
- Mock/Practice Test Lesson: Step-by-step instruction to ensure that you meet the requirements set by the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles, in preparation for your Pennsylvania Driver’s License Exam. (Click the link above to schedule PA Driver’s License test)

Our Vehicles
Cindy Cohen School of Driving has a fleet of cars in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Our cars are maintained and detailed weekly. All cars are specially equipped with dual control brakes and gas pedals so that the instructor can accelerate, slow, or stop the vehicle if needed. We have extra mirrors that provide the instructor and the student with full visibility. All of our instructors can drive the training cars from the passenger’s seat without anyone in the driver’s seat, if necessary. All of our vehicles have a five-star safety rating.

This driving school was great and fairly priced. I have recommended it to many of my friends who need some additional driving practice. I took all of my lessons with Lenny and he was very patient, helpful and did not ever make me feel too nervous. I started from about 7-8 hours of driving experience so I was still quite novice but I was able to pass my test within a month of starting lessons with Lenny (on my first try). Lenny gave very detailed instructions on what the test would entail and the major things to look out for that other students have failed on, but also taught me a lot about driving in general and more complex things that you are not tested on (for example, getting on and off the highway). I was also able to schedule my first lesson within a week of my first call to the driving school after about a month of trying to contact a different driving school. I passed my test which was nice but I also came out of the lessons a more confident, calm and patient driver. Overall this school was excellent and did exactly what I wanted them to and more.

Having just received my license earlier today, I have nothing but good things to say about this school.
From the very first lesson you can tell how committed they are to delivering the best possible experience for their students. I was sent personalized text reminders for my appointments, and staff were always approachable about scheduling appointments.
My instructor (Audrey) couldn’t have been a better fit if she tried. She was helpful and informative, but above all else extremely patient and encouraging about progress being made in the class. Through her expert guidance, I made the shift to a confident, capable driver in record time.
I would easily recommend this school to anyone looking to learn how to drive. Especially those going through a service like OVR - the staff will gladly work with you to make sure you succeed!

I thought I will never drive... And then 2 months ago my husband found Cindy's school online and saw reviews and we decided to give it a try. Now, for this school I only have the best possible things to say. From the first contact with Rusty, trough scheduling process mostly ...with Sue, and than through 6 lessons that I had with Audrey - the very best driving teacher I could even imagine - it was all great and encouraging experience. Now, Audrey, she didn't have the easy task. Apart from teaching me how to maneuver the vehicle, she had to help me overcome my anxiety about "being in the traffic, pretending to now what I am doing while I actually have no clue". And she did. She left no questions unanswered and no driving task uncovered, all while being fun to be around. I came to my driving test fully prepared and confident, and I passed. I had a negative customer service experience with this business. Because of my personal error, I had to cancel my appointment and incur the cancellation charge. I reached out to give my input on the cancellation policy, which I had not read up on in the disclaimer section of their website that it is the full class fee, not a percentage. I simply wanted to offer feedback that while I was not disputing it, the policy should be made more clear. Cindy contacted me directly via ...phone call and became very defensive. When I explained (for the third or fourth time) that I was not contacting her to dispute the charge she changed from defensive to aggressive. She said over an over again that she didn't know why she was calling me, and that it was in fact HER that should feel wronged by the experience. She left the conversation saying I would not find another school in the area with a better cancellation policy. I have since contacted Roger's School of Driving, who has a clearly more stated cancellation policy which is a fraction of the class price. I reached out to Cindy again to let her know, as my intention is and always was to give constructive feedback. Unfortunately, a month later it still seems the owner if this business isn't interested in any amount of self reflection or constructive feedback to become more explicit with policies and with customer service. I got my driver's license today finally. I went to two other driving schools and did not feel comfortable with them. I took my test twice and failed. I decided to try Cindy Cohen. I definitely made the right decision. I took 1 lesson and then I had my test two days later and passed. My instructor was Freddie and he was the best driving teacher. He was very patient and honest. If I did something I was not supposed to do he didn't get frustrated, he took time to explain what I did wrong. He showed me how to fix it and then told me to do it. I would recommend Cindy Cohen to anyone!

He stressed the importance of coming to a complete stop at every stop sign, checking my blind spots, using turn signals,among other important points. I had zero experience behind the wheel three months ago, and today I passed the road test and also feel like a confident driver. Fred Galati and Dave are tremendous instructors who are professional, patient and honest about my progress. It's not about just passing the test, it's more about establishing good driving habits and mentality. The lessons were educational and enjoyable. Fred and Dave are sincere and genuinely kind people. It had been a privilege working with them.On another note, I admire the way Cindy Cohen School manages the business. They are punctual and responsive about scheduling. I passed my test the first time around, and I thank my instructor, and Cindy for that. My driving instructor Freddy was patient, explained everything I needed to know, and gave me helpful hints that family members might not think about. For example, knowing how many rotations of the steering wheel takes you from all the way right/left to straight comes in handy whenever you're practicing parallel parking. Freddy was easy to talk to and made me feel relaxed behind the wheel. It was easy to contact Cindy and Freddy by phone as well. On the day before my test, I was freaking out; Cindy and Freddy helped me feel comfortable when they returned my calls on their own personal time and talked to me extensively about what to expect on my test.

The lessons are very good, I took lessons with multiple instructors, Freddie, Glen, Lenny and Tim, all of them are great and I learnt a lot. What I like the most is that they take me to the place where I will actually have the exam and do a trial run there, after several practice, I built up my confidence and familiarize what will happen in the test. So when I'm actually taking the test, I already anticipate what's going to come and what will the officer ask me to do, which make the exam felt controlled.

Although it is a little expensive but I would say it is worth to have at least one lesson with the school instructor. Cz the instructors are so professional and expeirenced. They know what is your problem and how to train you to fix it. They would understand the starter's worries and concerns so they will be patient and let you have more and more confidence. As a starter, learn how to drive in a safe and correct way is very very important for me, and Cindy Cohen School did not disappoint me. Especially instructor Mr. Fred, Steve and Ronnie are very patient and professional! Highly recommended. Moreover, Ms. Sue also help me a lot for booking the road test and finding an instructor on an off-day to take me for the road test when all other instructors are not available and I have no other time for road test. I took three lessons with Freddie. He was professional, friendly and flexible. He was about 5 minutes late on average but he did not mind even though the lessons went 15 minutes overtime twice. I was a little apprehensive to go to a driving school because of the high prices, but I felt I got the value for my money. The lady who answered the phone at the driving school was also helpful and always responded promptly to all my questions. I recommend them.

When I tell you that Cindy Cohen Driving School is the best, please believe me!!! I went for a drivers test at the Penn Hills Penndot and I was so nervous because of the bad experiences I heard my friends had there. Audrey was my driving school instructor and she is literally an Angel! She was so patient with me and assured me that I was going to do well on the exam! I passed on my first try! My experience with Cindy Cohen School of Driving was excellent! It was worth every penny! I took 6 total lessons with Frederick Fenner (Freddie) and he was fantastic. I was really anxious about driving and really tense, but Freddie continuously talked me through every step and assured me he would allow me to make small mistakes so that I could learn from them and that he would point them out and correct me but that he would never let me endanger either of us. He explained things that no one else that had tried to teach me had explained and each lesson had a goal and showed me something new to master! I took the lessons because I was desperate to get my license in a timely manner and had a very busy work schedule and they did everything they could to work with my schedule. I took my road test within the time frame I wanted and I passed on the first time! I highly recommend the driving school and I highly recommend Freddie.

I took my lessons & my test with CIndy Cohen School of Driving, & I was very pleased with the service. I passed first time! I took lessons with Lenny, who always gave great & beneficial feed back that helped me become a much more confident driver. Thank you Lenny. When it came time to take my test, Lenny was not available and I got to take my test with CINDY! I told her going into it that I was really having doubts about my parallel parking, and her goal before my test was to get me where I needed to be. She succeeded! As an adult going into this, my anxiety was very high and I put a lot of pressure on myself. Cindy understood, and she truly did help and encourage me to realize that I had this!I admire and completely respect her and her business structure. I would highly recommend Cindy Cohen Driving School for any new driver. They will get you that confidence and peace of mind you need when taking off on this new journey! There goal is to ensure that your driving skills are technically sound and safe. I had an international license and reached out to them to help me taking a road test as I had difficulties in the past with taking rental or Zip car for the test. I talked to Cindy, who was extremely helpful. My daughter was nervous when she first got her permit and started driving. I knew that combining an anxious mother with a nervous daughter would not be the best driver instructor/student combination. So, I talked to other parents, read reviews, and found Cindy Cohen. I spoke with someone on the phone at length before scheduling lessons and was reassured that they are careful, patient, and (best of all) love to teach people to drive. We scheduled a number of lessons around my daughter's schedule. She had the same instructor for all the lessons that were booked. The instructor knew what she needed to work on and what she was confident doing behind the wheel, so time wasn't lost practicing what she could do competently. She took her test as soon as she completed 6 months with her permit--and passed easily. My daughter gained tremendous confidence with the lessons, and formed good, safe driving habits from her regular practice with the instructor. Between lessons, she practiced with me in the car, and because she had developed good skills I wasn't nervous as she approached intersections or blind curves in the road. Most parents admit they aren't the best teachers for their kids as the teen learns to drive. Cindy Cohen Driving School is a great choice for those parents and kids.

I'm quite happy with my two lessons so far. Both Clayton and Lenny were very nice and patient. They explained everything clearly and emphasized enough on important but easy to forget parts. When I did something wrong, they just gently told me what's the right thing to do. Their humorousness and easy to go along with character created a relaxing atmosphere, which greatly reduced my nervousness. Really enjoy the learning process. Look forward to my next lesson and would definitely recommend this driving school.

Cindy and her team have been wonderful! I've always had a lot of anxiety about driving but realized I couldn't put it off any longer. I took lessons with Krista. She helped me conquer my fear of driving and being on the road. Krista is very experienced, down to earth, and a great teacher; she helped me feel comfortable behind the wheel. On the day of my test, she picked me up much earlier than my appt. so that we could practice the road test and parallel parking... and I passed my first try! As a suggestion, I would book your lessons WAY IN ADVANCE, as they are often booked. They do have a wait-list and I can vouch that Cindy will actually call or text you back if they have an opening.

Fantastic experience. Cindy rocks. I was a long-time non-driver and when I finally decided to get over myself, I called this school. Cindy talked to me one Friday night when she was supposed to be on vacation. She answered my many questions patiently and gave me some much-needed confidence. Long story short, I took lessons from Cindy over about a five week period. Yesterday I passed my exam with a perfect score. I truly could not have done it without Cindy, who I can't speak highly enough about. I would recommend Cindy Cohen School of Driving to anyone without hesitation. Thank you Cindy!
