I took the road test today at the DMV with Mr. Leon. I passed the test without making any mistakes. This achievement is the result of not just my efforts, but also of the great training and services from Helms Driving School. I would personally recommend all instructors, because they are all great at training their students. My favorite instructor, though, is Leon; he knows exactly what to expect from his students and what factors are the most important for passing the road test and for being safe drivers. He also gives specific instructions and advises to trainees along with helpful compliments. Ms. Margaret is also a very great instructor if one needs to become a safe driver who takes driving seriously. She is the most honest instructor in telling her students where to improve their skills. The only drawback when driving with Margaret is that since she is the owner of Helms Driving School, who always tries her best to keep the school in its greatest shape, she often time has to take phone calls from customers. Fired a woman that didn't deserve to be fired. She was very great and taught me very well. I am highly disappointed to hear that the boss yelled at her in the car and continued to call me and when I requested for her he said that she wouldn't be there tomorrow most likely. I highly recommend Brittany and I loved driving with her. She kept me very calm while teaching me things I needed to know. Wow! Wow! Wow! A+++ Business! Customer Service is their specialty!Margaret absolutely bent over backwards to accommodate my child! She treated us like family and went out of her way to make sure my child finished driver's education as a birthday present on that day! Two days was all it took for behind the wheel! How wonderful! One on one instruction that is top notch for three hour sessions for two days! She even went out of her way to ensure that my child received the perfect instructor! Whitney is absolutely AMAZING! She is so sweet and relaxed and had my child driving confidently in two days even in traffic and on the highway! Wow! My first time ever driving with any driving school. I seen this Business online with 5⭐so I decided to give them a try. So when I made me an appointment for a certain day the driver that was sent to me her name was Arsha (Thee worst) she arrived at my house did not call before she came she just showed up and called and said "I'm from the driving school and I'm sitting outside your house" very unprofessional!!! When I came out and walked to the car she was sitting in the drivers seat while I was waiting for her to come out the car and introduce herself, I got in the car and she still never introduced her self. I had to ask her who was she and what is her name. Before we began driving I told her my experience with driving which I told her I had none and that I am very nervous. She did not respond at all she just told me to get in the drivers seat. She started to ramble with the basics of the vehicle as if I knew what she was talking about. She wasn't sure that I was sure she just assumed I understood. Before we drove off I started to fix my seat and adjust it to my comfortably and she said girl what are you worrying about getting comfortable in the seat that's not important!I ignored her and continued. As we drove off she gave me directions or a right turn and I made a mistake and took a left she got upset and sucked her teeth and said "what did I tell you" at this moment her cell phone went off and she picked it up then told the person she'll call them back then started texting as I was driving. (Remember I never drove a car before) so as I'm driving a bus was coming near the car and she told me to take my hands off the wheel and to just control the gas & brakes and she swerved around the bus I was scared to death. This girl her should not be teaching nobody how to drive she should not even be in this field. Just because you know how to drive doesn't mean you can teach!!! The worst driving school ever. As a young adult who recently moved to North Carolina, looking for a driving school saying that this was the best company is a lie. I wasted so much money for some instructor to tell me I was good until I had the original instructor who took me to the DMV and said I was the worst and yell at me. I realize most comments were negative on this business but my daughter and myself had a very good experience with the instructor, Whitney, and the owner, Margaret. Helms driving school is horrible i reffered my boyfriend to this "company" the worst thing i could have done! i spoke to the owner margaret helms who seems very nice over the phone. feeling confident in the company i then gave the number to my boyfriend they took his money for $120.00 for a driving lesson and for the use of the car to take his driving test, they then told him while in line that they had another appointment and that they would not allow him to take the test because they needed to get another student Editing to reply to the business owners reply 8/3/17 Yes I am in NYC I also made the appointment, paid for his insurance (which he had) and subsequently found a different business and didn't have any drama!He did however, which I see that I neglected to mention did get the 120$ back YET he did have to take two days off of work (because he had to go to another place) meaning that he actually lost money but whatever and again these are my experiences with this company it wouldn't be a place that I would recommend to people but honestly who cares these are opinions based on my time dealing with them if you had a great experience (or you feel the need as a business owner to reply 3 years later) more power ours was the opposite  ..... 3 years ago so again who cares Read Less

It's a shame the instructor, Leon, doesn't have his own business. I enjoyed his patient instruction and looked forward to working with him again, but trying to book lessons through the unprofessional owner Margaret was a nightmare. I purchased a 6 hour package and every lesson I tried to book (3 times!) was canceled or rescheduled right before the lesson. When I asked for the company to commit to the schedule they had given me, Margaret became very aggressive and told me that they would not be able to stop changing the lesson time because of "traffic", and that she would "cancel" the rest of my lessons and send me a refund (which I did not ask for - I was only trying to keep the lesson time I had been promised.) She not only changed the lesson times, but the instructor as well! Anyone who takes driving lessons knows how important it is to continue to practice in the same car, with the same instructor. When I told her this,  she HUNG UP ON ME! I have NEVER been hung up on by a "professional" - which obviously this company, and woman, are not. I have been promised a refund and if I don't receive it, I will write another review and report this business to the BBB. Read Less

Margarate is totally unprofessional....their car is mess...from inside its garbage....picked me up 45 min late....mine was 1 hr practice test with road test...instead of 1 hr practice test--gave me 30 min practice test.......while I was having practice she constantly yelled at me......and wanted me to do more practice so I would pay her more...told me that you dont make signal while you pull ur car out from parking lot...when I said we have to make signal then she shouted at me that they will fail u if u make ..when I started car she was giving me all instruction so I was driving slowly, and she yelled at me that you dont drive this slow, they will fail u....and finally, she lost registration of her car just before my road test and I had to use other car....I hops this helps u...I think she is having a big attitude problem.... I wud say choose this driving school only if u want to do >6-7 hour practice with them...if u know driving well then pleaseeeeee avoid margarate....... and, she has now started using 'Aron driving school'....so when u choose that make sure you are not with margarate.... I absolutely recommend Helms Driving School. Margaret has years of experience and teaches you not just how to move a vehicle, but also how to drive with good etiquette for other road users, your passengers and your car so that things go safely and smoothly. The key to success is listening and following Margaret's instructions. She will not let you get away with mistakes, and you may get scolded for repeated offences. But there is no disrespect and definitely no yelling in it. Being corrected is part of the learning process and she has your best interests and everyone's safety at heart. Me and my husband both had a great experience with Helms driving school. Margaret is a wonderful teacher and its only because of her that I could learn driving in just 6 hours with no earlier experience at all. She gives you instructions about every small thing that you need to know to be a good driver.She has a lot of patience explaining to you.I was doing the same mistakes over and over again but not one time did she lose her cool.Both me n my husband got our licenses in the first attempt. Several driving schools recomend me to the Helms school for my driving lesson for my stick shift car ( manual car). The Helms driving school where knowledgable and gave me confidence in driving a manual car, which is hard to do. They help me out & gave me a lot of information on how to deal with driving on the road and handling complicated situations with confidence. We had a horrifying experience with Margaret Helms. The woman has real attitude problem. 1. She thinks that in 15mins of class on day 1 you will be an expert driver on the road and will curse, abuse and be sarcastic to you all the time. 2. She comes by her own convenient timings and will force you to abide by her timings. If you have a class at 6:00pm, she'll call you at 5:15 and will be at your doorstep at 5:30 and will force you to start the class early as ""she doesn't like to sit in the parking lot"". Well if you can't manage your times properly then why decide 6:00pm to start?? 3. If you tell her that it?s not possible for you to be ready by 5:30pm for a 6:00pm class, she will charge you for the classes given and refund your money for rest of the classes and walk-off. Over all she'll tell you that she?s having this school for 17 yrs and never had an issue. 4. She didn't knew where to stop on an intersection in downtown and made me stop blocking an intersection and gave weird answers when I enquired about the correct rules.
