Learning to drive here this summer with Wendy has been such a pleasure. For background, I was born and raised in manhattan, never drove ANYTHING, never even sat in the drivers seat prior to my first lesson with Wendy. I loved Wendy as my instructor. She's definitely the tough love kind of teacher, but she handled my fast and furious truck drive turns very well. I had Elizabeth once as a sub for Wendy. She's very soft spoken and patient. Both excellent instructors, very different styles. Going into my test, i knew my turns were a bit muddled but my 3 point turns and parallel parking was great. HOWEVER, at Cunningham park, I had an inspector that Wendy had never seen there before. He had me reverse and pull out to leave the parking lot (nightmare) and then had me parallel park on a steep upward hill. When I botched it by touching the curb ( first time doing that), he then me parallel park on a huge downward incline (first time on such a hill). He also told me to drive at 20, instead of 23-25. Based on what I told Wendy, she said it sounds like he didn't know the terrain and picked bad streets. SO that being said I didn't pass. BUTTTTT I have every intention of practicing again with Wendy  when I have a block of time and retaking my road test with learn rite. Everything is completely taken care of and made the whole process a lot less nerve wracking. Read Less

TL;DR: Great, friendly, and courteous service from the time I booked the vehicle rental to the time I completed (and passed) my road test. I thought the vehicle could be a little better maintained, but otherwise, highly recommended.I live in the Bronx, and was looking to take the road test at the Havemeyer Avenue site. After exploring the area during a few lessons with a local driving school, I discovered that it was primarily an industrial area with relatively poorly maintained roads and signs. So I elected to take rent a vehicle and take the road test in Queens instead. My Google searches led me to Learn-Rite, which had great reviews, and was in an area that was familiar to me and easily accessible via public transit. After some research, I went ahead and booked on 3/14. Booking online was easy, although I had some concerns due to the outdated website. (I can't help it; I'm a designer!) But I later spoke to a representative at Learn-Rite to confirm the details of my appointment, which helped assure me that I was dealing with professionals. We confirmed the date, time, and test site location for Middle Village. I used Google Maps to peruse the site, which was residential, near a nice park, a definite improvement over the Havemeyer Avenue site. A few days before the road test, I received a confirmation email for the road test.Eventually, 5/12, the day of my road test rolled around. (It was the earliest date I could book.) I got to the Learn-Rite location a few minutes early. Wendy showed up a few minutes late, but she was more than amicable and shared candy with me. The car seemed a little lived-in, but it worked. We arrived at Middle Village and waited in a line of vehicles for our appointment. We were an hour early for my 10 AM road test. Wendy pointed out key turns for the test, and encouraged me to walk around and look for any pitfalls. It was nice to take a walk and enjoy the view on a breezy day. (I even got to pet a few doggos in the park!)By the time I returned to the vehicle, I was much calmer. Wendy and I went over the dashboard to review the car's layout. Not too long after, I was selected for the road test early, and Wendy left the vehicle. My DMV agent was a stern, but very nice woman who spoke very highly of Learn-Rite, of which her daughter had been a customer as well. I definitely had some missteps during my test, but ultimately I passed. I found the Learn-Rite vehicle a little stiff, but it was pretty simple to get used to. Wendy congratulated me, and offered to drive me to the nearest subway stop, and I went on my way.I can't speak to the driving school experience, but I would recommend this location for car rentals. I had one 45 minute lesson and Joel D. was my instructor.  I didn't know what to expect and have little driving experience and was quite nervous.  It is about a 16 minute walk from the Flushing Main St. subway station but is easy to find.  Joel was very friendly, patent, professional and able to effectively give constructive feedback.  He had a binder detailing the point system for the road test and gave me a short verbal lesson before we pulled out.  He went over the different functions of the car such as the break, signaling, the position of my foot and how my mirrors should be positioned and blind spots and the risks they can pose (all things I didn't know).  He even had me photograph my mirrors in addition to describing what I saw in them before we left for maximum safety.  In addition, he gave detailed instructions and answered all of my (many) questions while explaining how and why something is done in a clear and easy to understand way.  While we were driving he helped guide me and I gradually felt more confident and relaxed as I was quite nervous.  I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend LearnRite and Joel D who is an amazing instructor and I would love to continue lessons with him. I passed my road test today thanks to Joseph. I started off as a "nervous driver" and he was beyond patient and not over bearing. He would allow me to go through course of action and then tell me what needed to be corrected. I feel that was the better way for me to learn as opposed to someone hovering over my every move. Definitely would recommend working with him.The overall customer service is great--they remind you of appointments via email, and they're flexible for changes as long as you adhere to their 24 hour cancellation policy. The staff is always pleasant and accommodating-which I really appreciated! Read Less

Joseph has a very positive, easy-going personality and he made me feel extremely comfortable behind the wheel since day 1. He taught me hints to do parallel parking so I was able to learn it pretty quickly. He even offered to open up his schedule so that I could move my appointments and schedule an extra lesson in the week of the test. During the extra lesson, he made me feel very confident by practicing what to expect on the actual road test.I took my road test today and passed (first attempt). I passed my test couple of weeks ago. That went great. I recommend getting all your lessons with one single instructor, except one or two hours. I got all mine with Jason who was great. However, I was also happy to get a different instructor for one lesson, to get a different point of view. It took me 15 hours of driving lessons, but I am a 30-year-old city-dweller who used to consider himself hopeless at driving. I strongly recommend this driving school. Read Less

I bought the 5 lesson package deal which included the 5 hour pre-driving course. The pre-driving course was informative. The day of my first driving lesson, I meet in the car with the instructor, Wendy who asks me for my permit before we began. She asks me if I have my contacts on. I told her no I don't wear contacts/glasses. Apparently the DMV mistakenly marked my permit with a corrective lens restriction. (I was not wearing any sort of fashion glasses/sunglasses at the DMV when I got my permit either.) Wendy said she cannot continue the lesson "in case we get into an accident and then the cops are going to ask about the restriction and why you're not wearing corrective lenses." I highly doubt I would've gotten into an accident and even if I did, my corrective lenses would be a non-issue because I don't wear any! I was really bummed out I couldn't take my first lesson and now I had to go back to get this fixed at the DMV, but life goes on. This incident was not my fault nor the school's fault and I thought we were going to continue the lessons as soon as I get this fixed. No problem! The receptionist calls later in the day to tell me that her supervisors told her this lesson is being deducted and if I want to recoup this lesson I can pay an EXTRA $25. WHAT. Why should I be paying at extra $25 when you canceled my lesson? I understand their 24 hour cancellation policy but this was not a cancellation by me. Your instructor canceled on me for something that was absolutely negligible. During our brief conversation in the car, there was no mention about me losing this lesson or about paying extra for it. If that was explicitly stated to me, I would have gone home to get my "glasses" or "contacts" and would've returned for my lesson. This was an incident that should have been given more understanding on their part but instead they deducted it from my lessons. The instructor Wendy was dishonest and this is why I had to write this review. I asked for a refund to the rest of my lessons because I refuse to give more money to a dishonest company that stole money from me then try to get even more money out of me. They may have stolen $45 from me but they lost $180. If they would have waived the "cancellation," then they would've been paid, and I would've been a happy customer with her license already! Waste of my time. Read Less

2.5/5 EDIT: I just had an epiphany. The instructor I had was Wendy. I don't remember the instructor's name, but I signed up for five classes here last year. Aside from teaching me the moves(three-point turn, parallel parking...) my instructor literally did not help me at all. I signed up for five classes here last year(1 of which I only missed; they're really strict about 24 hour-advance rescheduling), which includes the 5-hour pre-driving course. Each driving class was an hour long. For a third of the time, the instructor would constantly check her phone and did not seem interested in teaching me. She would constantly "recommend" me to practice with a friend/parent. (If my friend/parent had that much time, would I need to hire you?) After all those classes, my bad habits were not corrected, and I failed my first road test at Kissena Park with 65 points. *anything over 30 = fail*For my second attempt, I passed with 10 points with a different instructor from a different school: I went to Union Auto Driving School with Wai Fong(recommended by a friend), who consistently corrected my bad habits and was never distracted. Prices with Union Auto were definitely more worthwhile too.   If I could go back in time, I would only sign up for the 5-hour course at Learn-Rite and take driving lessons elsewhere. All in all, it's not the driving school, but the driving INSTRUCTOR who will determine whether you pass the road test. Read Less

So as someone who knows how to drive but had to go through the process from scratch to get a license in New York, I was really dreading this. A five hour class seems like the worst and most unnecessary part of getting a license for someone who's already had one in the past. And it wasn't the way I really wanted to spend a Thursday night, but the instructor is funny, engaging and nice, and at the end of it I was surprised by how quickly the time went. Don't be fooled by the website.I can't even begin to say how painful this process has been. All I wanted was to book the 5 hour PreLicensing course, which in itself is a little annoying as I've been driving for 15 years but in order to get my US license I need to resit the exam.I book the course online through their Manhattan location tab on the site, knowing it was more expensive than others, thinking it would be better. Paid in advance, sorted.I then get a notification that I booked the Flushing location, which is not what I selected online.I call them up and apparently the Sunday class is only in Flushing, but yet the online booking form didn't alert me that I was booking that location, despite the button saying I was booking in Manhattan.Trains were bad that day, I get to Flushing 45 mins late and I'm told that I've missed too much of the 5 hours to just jump into class. I ask to reschedule but I can't reschedule til the beginning of April for April classes even though it's mid March.I called up on April 1st  to make an appointment for a Manhattan class, successfully book but yet again I'm in bad luck and my workday runs so over that I'm two hours past my appointment and since they take walk-ins on the day it thought I'd be ok.I call up today to apologies and ask to reschedule sine I've already paid, I want to stick with them. I'm then told that I've lost my appointment and without 24 hours notice I've lost my money, my booking, and that I'll have to reschedule and pay again through the system. There's are so many places in this city that will charge the minimum $40 and not be anywhere as painful. Don't waste your time with this place. Read Less

I had a 5-star experience with the people who are running this driving school, but I did not have the same level of satisfaction with my driving instructor.  Here is the breakdown of my experience:The 5-hour class:   The class instructor was informative and fun.  There was a dinner break in between, which was very considerate of them.  However, we were left by ourselves watching educational videos for the last hour and half when they were finalizing everyone's paperwork.Scheduling:  Scheduling with the school was an easy process.  They have a website for you to check your schedule, and they would call me two days in advance before each of my lessons.  Any last minute cancellation/change made by the school were at least 48 hours in advance.  My driving instructor, however, would often text me the night before our lesson (less than 24-hour in advance) and changed the time in order to work better with her schedule.  I wanted to be a cooperative student, so I worked with her schedule with no complains.  In fact, I even agreed to meet her in Queens since it was an easier commute for her than in Manhattan.  However, there was one time when she decided to change our location last minute (10 minutes before our lesson), and I missed her text because I was on the train.  She yelled at me for not checking my phone, and now she had to come pick me up from the original location.  Again, I wanted to be a cooperative student, so I apologized to her and went on with the lesson.Driving Lesson:  Unlike most students, I was great at parallel parking from day one.  However, I had trouble finding the right angle for turning.  I asked my driving instructor for advice when she criticized me, and she said, "there are no tips.  You just have to figure it out yourself with practice."  During our lesson, she would text and/or talk on her phone for scheduling other students.  Though I felt secure enough behind the wheels, it would be nice if she did not deal with other people's business during my lesson time.Day of the Test:  I scheduled my last lesson before my road test.  The night before my road test, my driving instructor texted me to change to a practice location closer to the road test site.  I thought it was a good idea, so I said okay.  However, I only found out the next day that she was not familiar with the area of the test site.  Instead of practicing and giving me last minute tips, we spent that hour trying to figure out our way around the area.  She told me that I chose a bad test site because the last 5 students she took there did not pass the test.  I was nervous enough about the road test, and that comment certainly did not help.  Not surprisingly, I did not pass the test.  The things we practiced in our lesson went pretty well during the test, but the thing that got me was a step that we never practiced before-- pulling over to the curb with good distance between the car and the curb.  I was asked to do that 3 times in a row until I got it right, which made me panicked and made stupid mistakes that eventually failed me.Final Thought:  The reviews on Yelp rate this particular instructor very well, and I am sure she's great for some students, just not for me.  5 Stars for the school, and only 2 Stars for my experience with my instructor.*Update:  Passed my test on second try with another school and a great instructor that did not have any of the issues mentioned above. I contacted a couple other driving schools and Learn-Rite was the only one who was able and willing to work with my schedule.  Their friendly administrative staff made me feel good about my choice, and I was ready to get started.I purchased the 5 lesson package which included the 5 hour pre-licensing course, 5 one hour lessons on the road and the road test (appointment and car.)The 5 hour class went by very quickly. The instructor Elizabeth was nice and funny and definitely made the time pass by. But the real treat were my actual lessons with Rebecca.  Rebecca was truly amazing. She made me feel comfortable behind the wheel, gave great instruction and would point out when I forgot to do something so i could fix it next time.  But best of all was how I never felt scrutinized or pressured- we talked about what was going on in our lives, the day we had that day, etc. All the while she would casually point out what I needed to improve upon, and give me instruction where I needed it.  Her laid back attitude but yet attention to detail and instruction was truly an amazing combination.I should also mention that I took the lessons in Manhattan, which definitely made it a bit harder, but prepared me not only for my road test, but for all sorts of driving situations. On top of the lessons themselves, Rebecca was always very responsive to texts, we would coordinate on location and time if there was a last minute change, which was extremely helpful due to my hectic work schedule. I had 5 lessons with my package, and purchased a 6th one right before my road test, which was great because I was able to get some last minute practice in before my test.  Because of that, i am pretty sure I did the best parallel park of my life on my test! I passed my test on my first try, and felt really great about it.  I would have never been able to pass on my first try without Learn-Rite or Rebecca.  I 100% recommend them, you will pass on your first try if you stick to your lessons and practice, and if you have Rebecca as your instructor.THANK YOU!!!! I've searched for the right driving school for about a year, before I settled with Learn Rite Driving School, because they were the only ones who truly cared about me. I purchased their Level 2 Manhattan package (10 lessons, 5 hour class, test appt, car & instructor for the road test), and I can confidently say that it was worth the investment considering how I PASSED MY ROAD TEST the first time I took it, all thanks to Rebecca!!! Let's start with the classes. Rebecca was my instructor who picked me up from home in Manhattan. Our one hour lessons flew by because not only was she teaching me how to drive, she was also giving me helpful tips about the road, because she wants you to be safe for the rest of your life behind that wheel.       I was given the opportunity to practice what I felt were my weaknesses (ex. turns, parking,) and it was good to have my  voice heard during the lessons, because no other instructor  really cared about what I was anxious over behind the wheel. Rebecca took the time out to get to know me and my driving style, and then she put her own finishing touches on me to ensure that I was a safe, observant driver, who passed her road test on the first try. She gave me the confidence I needed to feel comfortable behind the wheel and kept me on my toes. From the administrative side, I liked the fact that the school kept checking up on me and ensuring that all of my lessons were going well. They worked with my schedule and I even combined some of my lessons together and did 2 hour classes with Rebecca. Rebecca will also always work with your schedule to make it convenient for you and ensure that you get the most out of all your lessons. The 5 hour class flew by. The classroom itself was very modern and beautifully furnished. Elizabeth, the 5 hour teacher, made it interactive, fun, and educational -  so do not dread it. You'll end up wanting to sign up for another class afterwards! On the day of the road test, I had a lesson with Rebecca beforehand, which really helped me, as she gave me last minute advice and calmed my jittery nerves. She pinpointed the areas where I needed more improvement and kept reminding me not to make the same mistakes again! So, of course, I passed! How could I not?! Not after all the hard work Rebecca  and I put into this !With polite and professional receptionists, a fun 5 hour class teacher, and the best driving instructor in NYC - you are bound to Learn to Drive! You'll pass your road test on your first try, no worries there; but you'll also learn to be one of the safest drivers out on the road for the rest of your life. Marcus Vargas, that is the name of the instructor that you should ask for. I had a ten hour driving lesson with him and after a month I went to take my driving test and passed it. I am from Queens, N.Y. and that was my very first road test. :-)Marcus is not your average teacher. He will talk and cover the topics that you have to learn BUT YOU AS THE STUDENT NEED TO DO YOUR PART TOO, that means you have to study and practice as much as you can until you master the rules and the basics. He may be a very very excellent teacher but your progress will still rely on your commitment and focus. He geared me up in parallel parking, in turning and doing U-turns. He guided me and always made me alert of what is going on around me. What I love about Marcus is that he really concentrates on the psychology and the philosophy of driving, it made the two hour lessons less boring and a bit entertaining. He helped me a great deal on handling my fears and in anticipating situations that might arise while in the road (some of them did happen).I also had a five-hour sit in class with Ms. Margaret. Ms. Margaret will open your eyes to the seriousness of driving a vehicle. Trust me, after this class, there is nothing that you will value more than your safety, and the safety of the people around you. She is very knowledgeable and very passionate about the things that she teaches, I highly recommend her too.Learn-Rite Driving School is indeed a very excellent driving school from the professionalism of the receptionists (Beth and Mable, thank you ladies) to the passion and skillfullness of the driving instructors.

Read Less
