I am happy that I chose an instructor who is mostly reviewed on Yelp because I was looking for someone who is direct with instructions and simply here to help his student pass the exam, as well as ensuring the fun you'll have when driving your own car.I only took 6 lessons with him, and didn't drive for a year because my family does not own a car. Yet, I'm still shocked that I managed to pass. Additionally, on the road test, Sing was being kind and helpful with what I should expect when getting in the car with the evaluator. I had a great experience with this driving school. The price is definitely higher up there compared to many other driving schools available nearby. I am pretty sure they increased the pricing within this last year. However, with the increased pricing, you get more flexibility in schedule (opened on Sundays) and the instructor I had picked me up and dropped me off at home. I had two instructors - Tom and Steve. I primarily was being taught by Tom, but his schedule was so booked - I had to take classes with Steve as well. Both instructors have different styles, but learning from two people taught me different approaches and perspectives to driving. They're both very kind and knowledgeable. Please note that during the summer, they become extremely busy with students being out of school, so you need to book your classes in advance. Lets just say.. I passed my road test with 6 lessons (and practice on my own time) with instructor Steve! The package I bought was the 425$ one and it is totally worth it to pass your road test on the first try. I came in with zero driving experience and Steve was very thorough and knowledgeable! He can literally drive in the passenger seat so I felt safe with him. He speaks fluent English so for those iffy about it being a Chinese business (not being able to understand the teacher) you're good! He tells you how you're standing depending on what week it is and will tell you if you need more lessons or if you're on the track to success. The only bad (small bad) about Steve was that he told me to use judgement for turning the wheel to turn so I didn't really get it. My boyfriend ended up teaching me a beginners trick to take turns. I highly recommend this driving school, as all the staff are super nice & try their best to be flexible with your schedule. My instructor was Steve, and he was amazing! He helped me pass my road test with 7 classes in only ONE month, including the class right before the test. I had no prior driving experience, never even touched a wheel and with one month experience was able to pass. I doubted my ability since I have friends who went to other driving schools and failed due to little experience, like me. However, Steve is very thorough and patient with his teaching, while at the same time being direct/straightforward enough to make sure his students pass. If you've never had driving experience, and you're afraid that you might crash or make mistakes, you don't have to worry with Steve cause he's always alert when you're driving and will use his brakes if you don't see any oncoming cars (happened to me once). Great overall experience, they make it super easy to book appointments and they are very accommodating. My instructor Steve was awesome, real cool guy, very down to earth. He was very informative, great tips and all around a great teacher. I would ask for him by name, I think they have a couple of instructors. I'm sure everyone there is professional. This is very good place to learn how to drive I went to other place and It was a desaster. After looking up several driving schools, I came across New Bens and realized they had affordable and reasonable package deals! Each lesson is 90 minutes long (compared to the usual 60 minutes at other schools) which is one of the major reasons I decided to sign up here. Everyone I dealt with at the office was super duper nice and made scheduling my lessons a piece of cake!I asked for Sing to be my instructor because of all the awesome reviews I read about him on yelp and he truly is the absolute best! Very flexible scheduling, highly recommend scheduling a class right before the road test. Steve was my instructor and was awesome, very helpful with giving instruction and laid out exactly what was on the road test and where I had trouble with. Great conversation as well and helped me be more confident with the actual road test which I passed on the first try thanks to him. Steve also took me on the more crowded and busy roads in order to have more practice with decision making and defensive driving in a real life situation. The best decision I made! I found out about this school thru my sister. The staff is very friendly and they are very flexible and understanding with the scheduling. I took 9 classes to be on the safe side and it really benefited me. Tom was my instructor, he is very patient and willing to help, every chance he gets! I learned about New Bens from a friend and decided to sign up for a 3-class + car rental package to take road test as my permit was nearing its expiration. Sing was my instructor and he was extremely thorough, straight-forward and absolutely did his best to prep and equip me with any knowledge I needed to pass. Ever succeeded while challenging the odds? Well after 2 previous attempts at other testing sites, I was devastated. NB gave me the confidence and the refreshers I needed to pass the road test this time around. A slight detour off the busting of Main and you'll find NB located across the smaller municipal lot in Flushing. The staff here are very friendly and knowledgeable in guiding me through the whole process. Ms Gloria in particular was extremely helpful and took the time to explain every its and bits of everything from the route to the site of the road test. Sing was my driving instructor and I am particularly fond of his teaching style in terms that he actually helped explain the purpose of each movement, rather than to just instructing me to do so without a correct understanding of it. Just a really cool dude to be around, I have to mention that we did our student driving sessions all around in his WRX. This sports charged engine was beyond my previous driving school experiences in some plain old Corolla. I did end up using our own vehicle for the road test, but Sing prepared me to easily apply his lessons onto my own car. To sum it up. I had a superb experience in dealing with folks here at NB1. I was able to schedule for classes the next day2. Staff from receptionist to the instructors were all bilingual and fluent in both English and Chinese3. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS DRIVING SCHOOL!!! the front desk is nice. the instructors are horrid. i was promised the instructors would speak english but two of them barely did. the first instructor i got was johnny. he held the wheel and braked the car during the whole driving lesson. he took bathroom breaks and ate/drinked while during my lesson. he constantly harassed me as to why i didnt speak chinese. also the first lesson he did a shady practice where he only gave me 45mins instead of 90mins. the second instructor i got was sing. he was suppose to be the best of the best. in actuality hes the worst of the worst. he screams throughout the whole lesson. in the end i wasted $500 and no license. a guy working the front desk said how he was sorry and tried to resolved the conflict. pshhh your sorry your not getting paid no more not sorry i had a bad experience. they also have a policy where you have to call in 24 hours in advance to change the time for classes yet somehow the instructors decide its okay to change classes 2 hours before class starts.Read Less

The price at this school is pretty reasonable because all of the classes are 90 minutes (one hour & 30 mins) The people who work at the office are super friendly & professional. I got the 6 lesson package which was $325. It included the lessons, 5 hour certificate, one road test appointment & road test car rental. If you want to add additional lesson it's $40. They always give a constant reminder through email when you have a lesson coming up or they will call you if anything. I had previous experience from another school but it was way too pricey so I came here. My instructor was Sing. He's a super good instructor & he speaks English & Chinese. 100% recommend him because he has a lot of tips & tricks. He has his own way of teaching you how to park & how to fix yourself if you're either too far away or too close to the curb. I find his methods super helpful. He always boost your confidence & encourage you. The reason for the -1 star is because 3 days before my road test, I had to take a lesson with another instructor, Steve. I think he's new & just started working. I had to change my lesson & Sing was all booked up. I didn't mind that I can gain tips from another instructor but I didn't really have such a good experience with Steve because not even 10 mins into the lesson he told me that I wasn't ready for the road test which made me super nervous because it was 3 days away. We spend around an hour trying to park his way but I never got it so he told me to do it Sing's way & I got it right away. I felt like I wasted a lesson & gained nothing from that.Also honestly, I just didn't like the way he talked to me because he said that on the road test I have to sit there like a "good girl" & wait for instructions. It just made me feel so uncomfortable because I'm an adult...Needless to say I took my road test at Fresh Meadows & passed with flying colors using everything I learned from Sing! I had a really good experience with this place and I recommend it to anyone who needs to learn the basic foundations of driving. Let me tell you my experience. So I received my Learner's permit towards the end of May and immediately signed up for driving school. I took the five lesson package, which was $235. It included a $40, pre-licensing course, which is a five hour DVD that you watch get certified(required for road test), a road test appointment made by them, and a car to borrow for on the day of the road test. I had my three of my lessons in the first three weeks, post signing up, and afterwards I just drove with my mother a lot to better hone my skill. On the day of my road test (Mid July), I had one more lesson the day of my road test to review what I needed. I PASSED. I had an extra lesson, and they allowed me to refund that last lesson for $30. The important thing you need to know about Driving school is that, while their primary goal is to teach you the basics such as how to turn, how to stop, and how to park; they're also there to give you pointers on how to pass the road test, such as what to do and what not to do. Although in theory you should drive like you're doing the road test at all times, that isn't the case realistically. For those of you that didn't pass, or say that driving school failed you, I do want to say sorry you didn't pass, but for those of you who failed because you didn't have enough driving experience, take more lessons, or drive with a friend/family. Like all skills, they need to be practiced. I practiced pretty much every other day in order to really get myself comfortable behind the wheel. My driving instructor was a Chinese man named Johnny in case anyone is curious. If you're also looking to buy a car, this driving school also has a side business of helping people buy used cars. I spoke with the person, I believe his name is Bryan, he's very friendly and if you're looking to buy, he'll sit down with you to look for cars. They have a whole system of checks to ensure you get the best deal and quality, and they only take a 1% fee on your purchase, which is relatively cheap compared to other dealers. Read Less

I am not at all pleased with the conduct of the office staff at this driving school. Not only did they schedule me for a date in the past, but when I was pointing out the error to them, they were conversing with one another as a side conversation. I would not have been surprised if those had been the circumstances of my initial scheduling. Their carelessness caused me to wait at the meeting point for an extended period of time because the instructor also led on that I had the appointment time wrong, but later said that he thought I was someone else and that we had no appointment that day. While the instructor is good, I would advise you to take your business elsewhere if you don't want to risk having a frustrating driving school experience. Read Less

I had a terrible experience at this driving school as well and I thought there was nothing I could do about it, but lo and behold, I found that the school is listed in Citysearch. Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one that had a bad experience with the office staff and office policies as well. I bought an 8 class package with unlimited road test and I had to reschedule one of the classes because of a vacation. Well the office lady mixed up the dates and I got served with a $15 missed class fee! I mean I didn't even want to make the class up but I still had to pay a missed class fee?! I paid for a series of classes at this driving school based on the positive experience of my older brother (former student) and the single positive review. Though I agree that Johnson (the instructor) is excellent, their office staff is extremely rude, stubborn, and unprofessional. They made a mistake in scheduling a class, but instead of trying to treat the customer (me) right, they decide to blame me and try to charge me an additional fee to reschedule the course.
