Haverford was originally my first choice college, but I got waitlisted and then didn't get in. I still have positive feelings about this school though--it's understandable that they did not admit me, because my academic record was marginal. I decided to defer my college for a year, and rather than re-apply, I decided to go to Oberlin College. Some years later, I moved to Philly, and became friends with a number of Haverford students, and got to know the school a little better, along with other schools in the region. This school has a beautiful, calm campus, and lots of resources. The dining hall, residence halls, and various campus facilities are all very good. It's a pleasant school where students have a very good experience. The #1 downside that I've heard of is that students here get worse financial aid packages than at other similar schools. I know many students who chose not to come here because they could not afford it--whereas I knew fewer students like this at Oberlin, where I went.Haverford is often compared to Swarthmore, but as far as I'm concerned, the two schools are like night and day. I definitely gravitate more towards Haverford; the students at Swarthmore seemed jaded to me, and they seemed to place greater importance on grades and achievement, something I found off-putting. Students at Haverford seemed more down-to-earth and happier. While Oberlin and Haverford are similar (I think much more than either school is to Swarthmore), they are different in certain ways. Haverford has less obnoxious negativity. The atmosphere there is a lot more toned down and respectful. At Oberlin, there is some outright extremism, in the form of left-wing activism, and while I've heard rumors of the rare thing like this happening at Haverford, I think it's outside the bounds of what the school normally is like.On the other hand, Haverford can be a bit "vanilla" at times. The students there seem consistently sweet and smart, a combination which I really like, but it lacks the outright zaniness that some other schools have. One of my friends from high school went here and I heard this sort of complaint about it from him. I also have heard Haverford students complain about other students disappearing into their work--something that I don't think happened as much at Oberlin. The campus has a very quiet feel, not as lively as a lot of campuses of similar size.Haverford is also compared to Bryn Mawr and I also think those schools are more similar to each other...I think Bryn Mawr is a bit zanier and more folksy. Sorry, zany, folksy guys!I want to mention two last upsides and downsides of this school: one, it's right next to the Norristown High Speed Line, giving easy access to Philly via Upper Darby, via transit that is much cheaper than the Regional Rail. This is a huge asset! It also makes it easy to travel to U. Penn (or Drexel) via transit, as the 40th/34th street MFL stations are closer to campus than the 30th street regional rail station. This makes Haverford much more accessible to Philly, especially West Philly, than Swarthmore or even Bryn Mawr. The last issue, a little thing that I think reflects poorly on the school...I really wish Haverford would stop using chemicals to treat their grass. I don't care if most other schools do it...it's unnecessary, and I think it makes the school look bad to people like me who care about substance (ecological responsibility, biodiversity) over appearance (especially the appearance of sterile uniformity).
