Just wrapped up a two day class (successfully) at Site 2 in Randolph with John S. and Jeff A. Couldn't have been happier with the experience. I rode loosey goosey a bit in the past with a bunch of buddies and had no clue what I was doing. MSF seriously arms you with life-saving knowledge like no other. The Class: Everyone in my group passed but the AM class before us wasn't so lucky (two fails). All walks of life, all ages, all cracking jokes, and all supporting one another by the second day.-Randolph range is a newly paved parking lot although the course was off-kilter and threw off the Ridercoaches a bit. Really just meant setup took a few extra minutes --Not a big deal. The RiderCoaches:Both coaches were extremely personable from day 1 and don't waste time sugar-coating anything. They walk you through what's expected of you from the written and skills tests. Both John and Jeff had their own personalities and I think the best of it showed in these two days. They have their own coaching styles but worked well together; making it "easy" for everyone to pick up riding. Both have led very interesting lives and have tons of great stories which brought the class together, eased some of the nerves, and definitely led for a memorable experience. Thank you to the RiderCoaches and MSF for getting us started on what's going to become an essential part of our lives. #GreatFuckingSave Read Less

Fantastic course at the North Branch location. Bob, Rita and Dave were all wonderful instructors. Been riding off-road for several years and I still learned a lot from their basic riding course. They made sure we were equipped to pass the tests AND had the knowledge to ride safely in scenarios that weren't on the test. Instructors I had were great. Even when being corrected I never felt scolded, shamed or afraid while practicing and once we got past the basic, boring stuff like starting and stopping the bikes, we all started having a lot of fun. Make sure you have a rain coat! This course will go on, rain or shine. It was raining all of day two and we all took our riding test on a rainy, wet course! Glad I had a towel in my truck to dry off with lol. Read Less

I took the course at Brookedale community college in Lincroft NJ. The instructors were beyond helpful and the course should be mandatory for new riders. They start basic and work into evasive riding. The instructors have patience and very good communication. If you can't pass this course, you do not belong riding. I had a driver stop short on me the other day and I immediately remembered what we did in the course, which safely got me out of a bad situation. I have already recommended this course to friends and family.  Keep up the good work fellas, thanks for sharing your riding knowledge and skill. Read Less

I was really excited to take the basic rider motorcycle course with this school. I studied the materials thoroughly, transferred my NY driver's license to NJ in advance, purchased an awesome DOT helmet and borrowed a friend's car to drive the distance to Morris County College from Jersey City for the 3 days. Unfortunately, my excitement was dashed and my experience with the school has been extremely poor. I have since filed a claim with my bank for a return of my monies on a course I never got to take through no fault of my own. Upon arrival on the first day of class the administrator alerted me to the fact that in the license transfer, NJ DMV had mistakenly issued me an ID card instead of a class D license. I was turned away on the spot and told to call the school to reschedule. The following day (Sat) I went straight to DMV, they sent me to their supervisor and promptly issued me the correct class D license. I called RENJ on the Monday after that weekend - they asked me to email the corrected license which I did, and I was told to call back later in the week when my paperwork was sent back from the site. I followed up on that Thursday and was told my case was with their Board of Directors. I didn't hear anything from them for over a week. When I called to follow up I was told that they were super busy, having a tough week and that no one had further reviewed my case. I did receive a call in about an hour after with the response that I would need to pay an additional $50 rescheduling fee to reschedule my class. I explained that I felt this was an unacceptable situation, considering that I had not cancelled, I had showed up at the class on time, and was turned away for a DMV mistake that neither the school or myself had control over. In response, I was told that they have lots of other cancellation situations and that my situation didn't warrant any waiver of the rescheduling fee. If I really wanted to follow up on the matter I couldn't talk to the manager or supervisor, I had to write a letter to the Board of Directors with my request to waive the fee! I wrote that email to the Board of Directors requesting that the $50 fee be waived and that my course be rescheduled for a certain date. It was important that I take the class this month as I have to pick up my new motorcycle at mid month. They finally responded in writing that they would NOT waive the $50 fee and that it was my fault. It was clear to me after over 2 weeks of lack of responsiveness from the school and a request that I pay a $50 rescheduling fee for a situation that was not my fault, that this school is only interested in keeping my money and not really evaluating the facts and delivering quality service. Incidentally, I also discovered after re-reviewing their written terms that they only charge $25 for rescheduling, and that they were actually trying to GOUGE me further by requesting a $50 fee. I decided to start a claim with my bank to return the fees. Their unwarranted punitive treatment of me in this situation made me really doubt the quality of training they could provide on the motorcycle. RENJ has poor customer service and doesn't do the right thing by its customers - this is a company that is interesting in taking your money only. Read Less

I took the basic rider course (which is actually a course for experienced riders who want a refresher) and sprained my ankle severely. Though i explained to the instructors that i knew something was wrong, they told me to take a couple aspirin and get over it, additionally saying if I did not continue, I would be out the cost of the class. The ankle became much worse later in the day and I contacted rider ed of nj offices the following morning, prior to going to the emergency room for a ankle that swelled to the size of an orange, to alert them to the injury and inform them that I would not be attending again that day due to the injury. They refused to give any refund and offered no alternative. My injury was serious enough and my experience bad enough that I have not stepped onto a motorcycle since. Read Less

I completed the Basic Rider Course first week of April at the Piscatway, NJ location. I highly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in riding motorcycles or looking for refresher course if you have not been on the motorcycle for a while. Even if you have had your license, but never learned the basics, this is the course for you. My class included 11 students from age range 18 to 72, both men and women. And make sure you register well in advance. I registered as soon as the registration started in early February. I took the full day Saturday and Sunday course. The course started with classroom on Saturday, from 8:30 to about 12:30. Then went to the course, where we had lunch (see my notes later about food and water). Our riding session started late since the previous class was running late. So our day ended at about 7:10, just when it started to get dark. Similar routine next day. The classroom session focuses on the handbook that is provided. A question sheet was provided, which focused on the chapters from the handbook. We had to perform group exercise to find right answers and later discuss with the class. Video sessions are also included. Classroom covers very basics from different types of motorcycles, helmets, right gear to wear, to how to handle bikes on road, different riding conditions, breaking and swirling techniques and stuff. At the end there is a 50 questions test. You must get 80% score to clear the test. So pay attention. Test is simple if you have basic common sense. Must pass the test to get certified. The riding course is a big parking lot with markings and they add small cones during exercises. Bikes and helmets are available. You must bring all other gears as noted in the application such as boots that cover the heels, eye protection, gloves, full sleeve shirt.Started with basic exercise of just walking the bike with your legs. But at the end of the day, everyone (including those who have had no experience, like me) were comfortably riding the bikes. The exercises are well planned and gradually increases in difficulty. Each class has at least two coach and they constantly focus on the right technique. They guide and mentor you throughout. Listen to what they have to say and the two days will be effortless. At the end of the second day, there is a riding test. Its point based test. If you make mistakes you get points. Less points, the better it is. Everyone if my class passed. You will know the very first day if this is for you. If you drop the bike during the test, you automatically fail. So try not to do that.I must say that both the instructors were very knowledgeable. Both had decades of experience riding different motorcycles. They focused on making sure you get the basics right, while also giving advice on what really happens on the street. Both were patient and friendly. This is mentally tiring course. Make sure you take enough food with you. Take sandwich for lunch and protein bars. Double up the water you are planning to take with you. Add some Gatorade or whatever else you like. Even though there are water coolers at the facility, they run out of water soon. You will need every last drop.As suggested by the other review, if you are planning to use their helmets, take a bandanna. Target sells them at some of the stores. Good luck and ride safe! Read Less

I took the Basic Rider Course for motorcyclists a couple weeks ago with Rider Education.  I have to say I really enjoyed it, it was stressful at times but overall I enjoyed it.  First off, you HAVE to register for the course months in advance since the demand is pretty high.  Second, it's $250 to take the course.  Not cheap but in hindsight I definitely feel like it was worth it.  The course itself is pretty rigorous.  I took the three day course from Friday-Sunday, but I know there are two day courses as well.  I believe the three day courses have classroom Friday and Saturday night and riding on the course Saturday and Sunday morning.  The two day course has classroom Saturday and Sunday morning and course riding Saturday and Sunday afternoon.  It was pretty hot on the course in the morning and it definitely got hotter in the afternoon.  Just keep that in mind when you register...The time in the classroom is exactly what you would expect it to be.  Going through an instruction booklet, answering questions and watching some videos.  A lot of this is safety stuff which in my mind is the most important aspect of riding motorcycles but is never-the-less kind of boring. The course riding is fun but stressful.  If you don't know how to drive a car with a manual transmission you'll definitely be at a disadvantage since you'll have to figure out shifting from the ground up.  While on the bike you'll have to wear boots, a long sleeve t-shirt or jacket, long jeans and a helmet (they can provide if you don't have your own, but bring a skullcap or bandanna).  Again, it gets awfully hot in the summer not to mention the smoking hot engine you have between your legs.  Just keep hydrated, the last thing you want is to pass out while riding on a motorcycle.  Some of the exercises are pretty tough but challenge you to handle the bike better.Fast forward to the examinations.  The written exam is 50 questions, you can get 10 wrong and still pass.  It's easy.  The course exam is intimidating but I screwed up A LOT and still passed with a decent score.  Things on the course exam: figure 8 in smaller box, swerve maneuver, braking in the shortest distance and taking curves properly.  I put my foot down twice in the figure 8 plus left the box, I didn't brake fast enough and I was too slow going around the curves.  Overall, I didn't think I did too well but I only got 11 points ( 21 points is failing).  Whatever you do don't drop the bike or fall during the exam, that's an automatic failure. After all this you get a waiver and all you have to do is walk into the NJMVC and get a new license with an itty-bitty M for motorcycle on it.  Overall, I had a lot of fun and a good training course. I really enjoyed the class and am thankful that I took it, it was worth every penny!
