Great way to learn how to work a manual transmission or brush off a little rust if you already know. Detailed instructions in a friendly environment , and great spots picked out for practicing the specifics. Will you try things over and over until it really becomes automatic reflex. Car is great for learning too — not some old beater! Something you’d actually drive. Had fun.

Eager to head-off a mid-life crisis years before it developed, a small sports car with a manual transmission was just the thing I needed, something completely inhospitable to carseats and ground up cheerios in the floormats. The thing was, however, that I never learned to drive stick. While I was seemingly the one male in North America who couldn't drive stick, I was seemingly the only one with kids who wanted one and actually owned one. Everyone offered to teach me but no one had a classroom in which to do it.
Explaining my predicament to Jorge, he put me behind the wheel of a brand new WRX. It had maybe 150 miles on it. That's trust. He is, above all else, patient and professional. Let that soak in. This is his business and he's good at it. He knows what he's doing and there's a reason why you'll spend maybe 90 minutes getting in and out of first from a stop. It works. You won't leave this place driving like you're in the Fast & the Furious but you'll have a very solid base from which to learn manual transmissions. There is no stress involved.
My friend laughed when I told him that I paid someone to teach me to drive a stick, telling me that he could get me driving in 20 minutes. Perhaps, but I doubt it. Not everyone can teach and few have the patience that Jorge does. Time is precious and it's worth making the most of it. Hire a pro. Learn the right way and you'll be well on your way up the learning curve. I highly recommend SSA.

A 2 hour lesson for SSA was a birthday present from my parents, and it was fantastic. I was a bit nervous to start as I hadn't driven stick in a long time, but Jorge was patient, clear and non judgmental. By the end, I felt like I was really getting a grasp, and I'm confident I can get on the road now to practice on my own. Excellent experience, would recommend to anyone interested in learning manual.

About two years ago, I tried to learn how to drive a stick. I spent hours in a parking lot stalling and cursing, and made simply no progress. Spending just a few hours with Jorge at Stick Shift Academy, I was able to go around Watertown/Waltham side streets with no problem. Jorge is simply a great teacher, and very experienced and helping get people comfortable driving with a stick. He is extremely patient and very helpful with getting down the basics with lots of coaching and repetition. He focuses on making sure you know how to maneuver well between neutral, first, second, and reverse very well and as smoothly as possible. Additionally, Jorge does really care about his clients as people and your goals with learning. He was very responsive and accommodating and clearly works hard to do the best for his clients. I highly recommend Stick Shift Academy.

Jorge is very patient and goes step-by-step when he explains what to do. He is very relatable and easy to understand. Having no experience going in, I walked away from a 2-hour lesson being able to confidently a drive stick shift car! Overall, this a great experience, it was fun, and I recommend you take a class for Jorge if you want to learn how to drive stick.

I had driven a stick shift but over 20 years ago and with a Renault 4 where the stick shift in on the dashboard - think of a car but it's more like a metal box with wheels and very few features. Anyway after 2 hours of Jorge resorting to PLEase go easy on the clutch - I finally did and on my trip a few weeks later, I had no problem driving even though everything was on the opposite side of the car and the road. I highly recommend taking the classes and before you know it - you will save lots on European car rentals and probably have a nicer driving experience all round.

George is awesome. My husband tried teaching me (he has driven stick shift for over 25 years) but he is very impatient and afraid about his car too much to do it well. George was very patient and clear and set straight a lot of my misconceptions about the proper technique. After a two hour lesson, we pulled back into the lot for the business and my husband thought George was driving, it was so smooth! In the one week since I have had the confidence to test drive 2 standard cars at dealers ( 1 WRX like the business car and a BMW 440) and our Porsche Cayman. Thank you George and Stick shift Academy, This was the best investment.

George is awesome. My husband tried teaching me (he has driven stick shift for over 25 years) but he is very impatient and afraid about his car too much to do it well. George was very patient and clear and set straight a lot of my misconceptions about the proper technique. After a two hour lesson, we pulled back into the lot for the business and my husband thought George was driving, it was so smooth! In the one week since I have had the confidence to test drive 2 standard cars at dealers ( 1 WRX like the business car and a BMW 440) and our Porsche Cayman. Thank you George and Stick shift Academy, This was the best investment.

Went a while ago, but just had time to write this review. Jorge is such a genuinely nice guy and I asked him if I should get the four hour lesson and he said no you'll only need two, "yeah you'll see". He's an excellent teacher who pays 100% of his attention to you while being able to just have a friendly conversation. I went in with no experience and after one lesson I was extremely confident in my abilities. He's very friendly, knowledgeable, respectful and has a fun car to drive. Will be signing my girlfriend up for classes soon!

Just finished a 2 hour lesson with George, and am about to celebrate my success with brunch nearby! I scheduled the lesson because I am traveling to Italy in a couple months and I wanted to learn to drive a manual transmission car to have a more authentic experience on the road. George is an excellent instructor- very friendly and patient. We drive around in a parking lot for most of my lesson, and then drove back to his office on the road at the end (without stalling or lurching- success!). George mentioned that different cars feel and drive differently, so I'm sure I'd need to get the hang of it on my Italian rental before I felt totally confident, but George prepared me extremely well. I highly recommend a lesson from him, even just to learn something new!

George is awesome. The car is awesome. Driving a manual is awesome.I did a two hour lesson with George and I feel like I actually know how to drive a manual now. I felt like I got a lot of useful practice in a short amount of time and it was great to have somebody knowledgeable giving me guidance the whole way. George's explanations of how the car work and how to drive were really intuitive. And bonus points for him just being a nice guy. I'm not a particularly outgoing person but George made me feel like a friend of his.And the car is pretty cool. Sporty and has quite a kick to it. How often do you get to drive an Impreza wrx?Best of all, now I won't panic at the idea of having to drive a manual car! Which is good cuz I'll have to drive one in two days haha.I'd recommend doing more than the two hour session if you can. I feel I got the basics mostly down after the two hours, but I'd love to get more practice in and do a bit more "advanced" stuff. And just a heads up, don't panic if they don't answer the phone, just leave a voicemail or send them a message via their website. (I panicked when they didn't respond immediately but got a lesson scheduled in time anyway!)

George was a great instructor! He was patient and explained all of the steps clearly and concisely. In our first 2 hour lesson, we covered all of the basics, from starting in 1st gear, reverse, and even downshifting. He made everything seem really easy, and I only stalled once the whole lesson (which was my fault b/c I panicked and let go of the clutch too fast). We did everything in an abandoned parking lot, but definitely looking into booking a second 2 hr lesson and hopefully get some time on the streets.The car is awesome: 2015 Subaru WRX. I was actually thinking of buying the same model, so George even let me gun it a little bit to see how fast it could go. It's fast. No need to test drive at the dealership!In short, if you're looking to learn stick shift, definitely check this place out. They won't disappoint.

It took a while to find a school for manual driving. The instructor was on time and extremely professional. I scheduled for times that is not a usual time for any school. I have a full time job and when I get out it is already 5:30 but he was able to accommodate. He had a awesome attention to detail. I would definitely recommend anyone needing a refresher.

WOW, I am so impressed with Stick Shift Academy's customer service and responsiveness! I cannot recommend them enough. I had to learn how to drive stick urgently - flew in to see my dad who is in the hospital for an extended time and his car has manual transmission. Called Stick Shift Academy on a Saturday - someone picked up the phone immediately and agreed to meet me at their office. Don't be surprised that they ask for payment in advance - apparently they had a lot of no shows. If you are not comfortable mailing the payment, you can do what I did and arrange to meet at their office (I used a money order). The office itself is very nice and the transaction was handled very professionally. They actually gave me a 2 hour lesson on the same day I dropped off the payment. Did I mention it was a Saturday and they were busy?? On top of that, the instructor I got has a talent for teaching and was very patient. Also,you are not going to be learning on a stinky clunker, the car they use is newer and nicer than what I drive. THANK YOU SO MUCH Stick Shift Academy!

The thing was, however, that I never learned to drive stick. A 2 hour lesson for SSA was a birthday present from my parents, and it was fantastic. I was a bit nervous to start as I hadn't driven stick in a long time, but Jorge was patient, clear and non judgmental. By the end, I felt like I was really getting a grasp, and I'm confident I can get on the road now to practice on my own. Excellent experience, would recommend to anyone interested in learning manual.

About two years ago, I tried to learn how to drive a stick. I spent hours in a parking lot stalling and cursing, and made simply no progress. Spending just a few hours with Jorge at Stick Shift Academy, I was able to go around Watertown/Waltham side streets with no problem. I had driven a stick shift but over 20 years ago and with a Renault 4 where the stick shift in on the dashboard - think of a car but it's more like a metal box with wheels and very few features. Anyway after 2 hours of Jorge resorting to PLEase go easy on the clutch - I finally did and on my trip a few weeks later, I had no problem driving even though everything was on the opposite side of the car and the road. I highly recommend taking the classes and before you know it - you will save lots on European car rentals and probably have a nicer driving experience all round.

Jorge is such a genuinely nice guy and I asked him if I should get the four hour lesson and he said no you'll only need two, "yeah you'll see". He's an excellent teacher who pays 100% of his attention to you while being able to just have a friendly conversation. I needed to learn to drive a stick shift in a few weeks before going on a vacation. In two 2-hour sessions, Jorge got me from zero knowledge to feeling totally comfortable. Driving on the vacation went off without a hitch.He's a great teacher, knows how to explain what to do and guide your learning, and is fun to talk to while you're practicing.

Great car to learn in. Great instructor. Friendly, and patient, Jorge will teach you the basics from stepping in to a manual transmission car to getting going in no time. Would recommend highly.

George was a great instructor! He was patient and explained all of the steps clearly and concisely. In our first 2 hour lesson, we covered all of the basics, from starting in 1st gear, reverse, and even downshifting. He made everything seem really easy, and I only stalled once the whole lesson (which was my fault b/c I panicked and let go of the clutch too fast). We did everything in an abandoned parking lot, but definitely looking into booking a second 2 hr lesson and hopefully get some time on the streets.The car is awesome: 2015 Subaru WRX. I was actually thinking of buying the same model, so George even let me gun it a little bit to see how fast it could go. It's fast. No need to test drive at the dealership!In short, if you're looking to learn stick shift, definitely check this place out. They won't disappoint.

Stick Shift Academy is great! I had never driven a minute of manual transmission in my life and left a two hour lesson feeling like I had some of the basics down really well.The instructor, George, is friendly and a great teacher. He explains things clearly and can quickly understand what you're doing wrong to give you good advice. The car is nice as well, check it out!

It took a while to find a school for manual driving. The instructor was on time and extremely professional. I scheduled for times that is not a usual time for any school. I have a full time job and when I get out it is already 5:30 but he was able to accommodate. He had a awesome attention to detail. I would definitely recommend anyone needing a refresher.

WOW, I am so impressed with Stick Shift Academy's customer service and responsiveness! I cannot recommend them enough. I had to learn how to drive stick urgently - flew in to see my dad who is in the hospital for an extended time and his car has manual transmission. Called Stick Shift Academy on a Saturday - someone picked up the phone immediately and agreed to meet me at their office. Don't be surprised that they ask for payment in advance - apparently they had a lot of no shows. If you are not comfortable mailing the payment, you can do what I did and arrange to meet at their office (I used a money order). The office itself is very nice and the transaction was handled very professionally. They actually gave me a 2 hour lesson on the same day I dropped off the payment. Did I mention it was a Saturday and they were busy?? On top of that, the instructor I got has a talent for teaching and was very patient. Also,you are not going to be learning on a stinky clunker, the car they use is newer and nicer than what I drive. THANK YOU SO MUCH Stick Shift Academy!
