Jay is a great instructor. I was initially skeptical since the ratings were high. I didn't have any confidence in my driving, but Jay told me I only needed 2 more lessons (after the initial visit). I had my test today, and I passed! He was very helpful and patient during my lessons.  I liked how he picked me up and dropped me off. A couple of hours ago, I have taken my appointed road test at Dilingham's DMV (new location) on June 23, 2017.  Thank goodness that I passed closely with my first try. I must say this though: Mr. Hwang is a very dedicated, patient, and understanding instructor. This is because he listens closely and helps a learning person while teaching to make sure that he/she fully *absorbs (understands) the content of driving basics. For me, Mr. Hwang is one of the most rare driving instructors whom I met that demonstrates those positive characteristics. Furthermore, I taken about 5 lessons (2 hours per lesson) and have already prior scheduled a road test at the appointed time and location. Additionally, he allows you to borrow his car(used for teaching) for the road test as well. In conclusion, from my opinion about price rate, it was somewhat pricy but the result of attending the lessons is worth it. OMG. I just got my driver's license on my first try! and I was not in good situations. 1. I was born and raised in Korea, never, ever, drove before.2. I have no families or friends to teach me how to drive. Jay taught me how to drive, from the very BASICS. I took 6 lessons(12hours). He made an appointment for my test.And I just got my license on my FIRST TRY. Don't get me wrong, I was lucky to have lenient test instructor, too. Jay is such a great instructor. He was patient with me even if I was having difficulty learning to drive. It took me more than 10 hours of lessons. I was really having a hard time driving since I am already 28 years old and have no knowledge or experience in driving so those 10+ hours was worth it. I took the road test today and I passed even if it was my first try. So if you are like me, no longer young and have no training in driving at all, give Jay a call and I promise that you will not regret it. Read Less

I just got my license today. Jay is very clam and so kind. I took 4 sessions (2hr each session). Jay teaches all the techniques to become a good driver. He also let me borrowed his car on the exam day! Trust me if Jay can help me pass the road test, you will pass the road test too! He is a fabulous teacher. I don't normally write reviews but Jay is super professional, friendly, and informative! He encourages you while he accesses mistakes and explains why things are deducted. I was a little apprehensive about taking a lesson but he let me test the waters and I am a happy customer! I now know why he has 5 stars. He talks to you while driving but in a way that allows you to retain the information easily. It's rated 5/5 for a reason.Jay, the driving instructor, is a superb teacher. He is INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful. Heck, I'll admit that I always looked forward to driving with him. Jay did not leave a single detail out when it came to dealing with navigating through the DMV road test routes. Whenever I had any questions pertaining to the road, he answered them in a way where I had full understanding of the concept on the first try of explanation. He will explicitly tell you when you are doing something wrong, what you are doing wrong, and why it's wrong. All in a very easy-to-follow manner so that you're able to really remember and retain the rules and concepts.I passed my road test at the Kapalama DMV on the first try because of Jay. I've hired a private instructor previously and asked family members for help on driving, all of them were teaching me the wrong way! Jay was a really big help getting my license!! His very patient, he will correct you if your doing something wrong. He picks you up and drop you off. I took my test at the dilingham DMV and he showed me the routes and that was really helpful because I learned some tricks, on what to do and what not to do. Yes the price can get high, but it's a reasonable price and every that I spent was worth it. He also does pre-test and this helps him evaluate if you are ready to take the road test. Jay is an excellent driving instructor! Setting up appointments with him was a breeze and he was very accomodating. He has a very confident teaching style, which was very reassuring. He was extremely detailed with his lessons, and with the exam protocol. Jay was quick to fix and explain mistakes that I made, and made it easy for me to understand how to fix them. My first impressions was skeptical and that the entire experience would be too good to be true based on the ratings. However, after the past four weeks I was able to accomplish something I didn't believe would happen. Jay is a very patient teacher and will not be the angry family friend or person that has offered you help before. If you just need to pass the Dillingham test this is where to go! He gives you all the tools you will need to pass. I'm assuming rates have gone up over time, but it is neither expensive nor dirt cheap. He picks you up and drops you off after lessons. He has a good heart and if you're willing to listen and really want to pass then this is the place you should start! Read Less

My experience with Jay is a very positive one. I got my license on the first try. I took 3 sessions with Jay, thats a total of 6 hours.  He picks you up ang drops you off in a timely manner. On my first session with him, he taught me how to be aware of everything around you and showed me how to parallel park, I was so hesitant because I have never parallel park before but with Jay's simple teaching methods it was not a problem at all and i did it on my first try .. His methods of teaching are very easy to follow and understand.. I am always scared being on the wheel with my son on board but after taking driving lessons with Jay  he helps me overcome my fear on driving. He's not only make you a good driver but a good defensive driver as well. And here I am, got my driving license with Jay's help..He's the one who will make an appointment with your road test and all you gotta do is to show up at DMV and you can even use his car for the road test...Mahalo JAY! I just pass the road test on first time today. I'm so happy and I want to recommend Jay(My driver teacher) to everyone who want to get a driver's licence. He taught me everything that I supposed to do when I drive, and he also trained me to practice around the main road test round. I took 3 sessions and total is 6 hours. Im so glad i found Jay here in Yelp last month. I was frustrated with not being able to drive and is about to start working in a month time. Im the typical Asian who came here in the US and didn't know how to drive and is already 24. Sad yeah? Lol! But because of Jay's patience and professionalism i just passed the road test last Tuesday with confidence.He's the one who scheduled me for my appointment so you don't have to worry about coming very early in the morning to walk in. It took me 6 sessions, total of about 11.5 hours lesson with him which is already great for someone like me who has very little experience in driving. I don't have any other practice methods because my family are all busy with work, so i had to find ways myself. He will pick you up and drop you off every time. I researched different driving schools and programs before I found the Hawaii Driving Schools. I immediately called and requested for Jay. He's very accommodating where he will find time that fits both yours and his schedule. He will also come and meet you at your place (instead of you meeting them) and he provided the car. Lessons are $40 an hour and 2 hours for 1 session. (Please note this part of the review will solely be about my experience)I had my driver's permit in high school (5/6 years ago) and took drivers ed. Minors are required to complete 50 hours of driving in order to receive a certificate of completion; I was not able to complete the hours and receive the certification due to unforeseen circumstances. I live in town and only travel to and from school. I recently graduated and realized that many job applications note a drivers license as a requirement. I approached Jay with a direct intent to receive my license within a month. He replied "no problem." After 3 weeks of lessons with Jay (one lesson a week, three in total), I took my road test and passed on my first try! Jay's such a great instructor because 1. He's not freaking out or yelling at you like family members do when they teach you to drive and 2. He teaches you all sorts of neat tricks for things like parallel parking.
