Booked a lesson with Barbara for learning to drive stick. The problem with Barbara is, she teaches both NEW DRIVERS and drivers that want to learn stick. Now, drivers all have their own individual heuristics for driving. These are developed habits over years of driving that are very hard to correct. Don't get me wrong, bad habits need to be corrected. But there are many driving habits that are not bad, but neutral and ingrained in all of us driving for years. This is why learning to drive stick when learning how to drive in general is a great thing, since it's just "another" thing to learn while driving. But to teach stick to people who have been driving for years, the approach - even as a driving instructor - should be to TEACH STICK and nothing else.I've been driving for 8 years, and I'm very careful to correct bad habits. However, Barbara decided to treat me like a totally new driver and barked instructions at me, to do things the way she does them (such as brake 50 ft before coming up to a residential stop sign). I could barely focus on actually learning how to drive a manual, since most of my brainpower was split between focusing on driving, ignoring my instinctual driving habits, and trying to respond to her incessant questions and orders. She also ignored my requests to spend just 10 minutes in an empty parking lot to practice moving in 1st gear, since I kept stalling. Instead, I was forced to drive in heavy traffic (such as near Eastridge Mall). In the end, she recommended me to get another lesson as she felt I would not be able to learn on my own - well, she was wrong. Had a buddy with me to drive my new manual car home and learned enough to not stall in a day.I'd recommend anyone trying to learn stick as an already established driver to watch Youtube tutorials (trust me, they help much more than you think) and then learn in person with a buddy.
