OK. So I've never really learned how to drive manual transmission formally. I've managed to get by when friends let me borrow their car to drive them to the airport. thanks never burns out any questions nor have I had any overly embarrassing stalls.I've always wanted to drive manual transmission properly for when, or rather if, I ever get a car with this feature. I was surprised that there are not many driving schools that teach manual transmission. Those that do ask you to bring your own car!!!If i owned a manual, I would hopefully already know how to drive one. I wouldn't want to destroy a friend's or family's car.Thankfully I found this outfit, only on Yelp! Jason was quite accommodating. He offered an additional 2 hours back-to-back, knowing my schedule is busy, though I initially only agreed for 2.His car has a full set of pedals on the instructor/passenger side too. See my pic. He got me driving in Friday afternoon rush hour by the 3rd hour! We fine tuned parking and starts on hills the 4th hour.To be clear, I felt comfortable driving on regular routes at the end of the initial two-hour session, but I was very comfortable with driving and San Francisco after the 4th hour. His prices are very reasonable for the amount of attention and training he provided. The progression felt so natural. He's so good, he's on my 6 STAR list. He even offered to meet me in Daly City when his outfit is in San Francisco; I'm in San Mateo Read Less

This 5 star review is also for Jason Tang. I called up Jason as I really wanted to learn how to drive stick but my boyfriend wouldn't teach me on his German car (no, not because he doesn't think I can drive, but because the clutch is finicky). As others have said, Jason teaches you in a Toyota Corolla (?) with an extra set of pedals on his side, so no worries if you do something wrong. Jason is super nice, he has a great calm demeanor, and never once sounded freaked out or panicked. He was very sensitive to my needs, and even asked once if I wanted to pull over to get food or use the restroom lol. I took two lessons with him, Jason explains things very well. Got to drive boyfriend's car this weekend and miraculously, managed to get off into first gear without stalling. Though I did stall a couple of times, it wasn't as bad as what I would have probably done without the knowledge Jason gave me. I think the boyfriend was impressed by the quality of the education I received. A note though-while on Jason's car, he advises you to relax on the clutch until it vibrates before gassing. On a different car, that might not be the case-I had to do the balance/switch off on both pedals on my boyfriend's car in order to not stall it as a beginner (like what some You Tube videos advise). Jason's car is awesome to learn on. I would call him again if I keep grinding the crap out of the other car I practice on now. While the price may seem a little steep, keep in mind, I think he's one of the few guys who teach stick, you're completely safe in his hands, and the extra cost goes towards maintaining the car as he replaces the clutch every year.*Edit: apparently the way I was driving my boyfriend's car was due to my lack of skill lol. Don't do this in the long run, do what Jason says. I taught my boyfriend the catch point Jason was talking about, now he handles stop and go on hills like a pro. He was ecstatic.*Edit: Jason speaks English, I'm not sure what the guy below is talking about. His language skills are totally fine, he was a freaking engineer for a very prominent company at one point. Read Less

I had a really mean Chinese driver 2 years ago and he intimidated me so much to the point where I never wanted to learn again. Fast forward to today, the only reason why I pushed myself to get my license was because of clinicals for nursing school! Jason is an outstanding driving instructor and he will basically teach and prepare you for the driving test like a book. I loved the written instructions/handouts he gave me because my previous instructors only gave me verbal instructions on the road, which didn't process in my brain. Thank you Jason!!! Read Less

I called this school after I found out that they teach stick shift lessons.  Called the school, was told that the instructor will call me soon.  Few minutes later, instructor Jason Tang called and set up first appointment.  Very polite, professional, and fair price for manual shift lessons.  Rate is $150 for first 2 hours, then $130 for following lessons (2hours).  After 3 classes (6 hours), he said I was ready and that I no longer needed lessons.  Highly recommend if you are looking for stick shift lessons. If you're looking for stick shift lessons in San Francisco, go with Nu World Driving School. I've been scouring the internet for stick shift lessons in the SF Bay Area and I kid you not, I could not find a single driving school that offered stick shift lessons. Nu World Driving School is the only school out there that I know of in SF that offers stick shift lessons. The only experience I had with a stick was in an acquaintance's FIAT 500 Abarth. I stalled that thing half a dozen times before I lost the confidence to continue trying. I was kind of skeptical paying so much money for stick shift lessons because I didn't know what to expect, and if I'd learn anything at all. However I wanted to buy a stick shift car so I had to learn anyway I can. When Jason, the driving instructor arrived at my house, I was relieved because his car had foot pedals on the driver's side as well. He immediately put me in the driver's seat, gave me a quick run-through of the catch point of the clutch, and within 5 minutes had me driving all over the city. I was very impressed with Jason's patience, calmness, and positive reinforcement. By the end of the day I felt like it was money well spent because I now have the confidence to test drive a car without stalling it. You learn everything from hill-starts, backing out of a parking spot, parallel parking, etc. This course is very thorough. Ask for Jason Tang. Read Less

Carrying heavy groceries, bags, luggage, etc. all the time...with no help..no transportation but the bus/BART. One night at the BART station (Bayfair in the East Bay), this crackhead walked up to me wanting to start a fight because she thought I was laughing at her. First off, I didn't even look at her, I was looking at the sign to see when the train would come. Secondly, she was a white crackhead and everyone was just staring (everyone knows I didn't do anything wrong). Told my parents about it and they said all I need was a driver license, then they would immediately buy me a car. They said this because they worry that since I'm so small (4'10), one day I can get jumped or kidnapped going home or something using the bus/BART. Sigh, how much I wished for that...it seemed like it was so easy to get but yet so hard... People would always make fun of me for not knowing how to drive and I had no car to practice on even if I wanted to! My parents lived in New Orleans, LA and that was the only time I ever got to drive..in the South. Flat road, no hills. Oh the challenge when coming back to California. Since I had no car to practice on in Cali, my parents suggested I hire a driver instructor. My parents recommend this guy named T (his name will not be known) to me. Let me tell you..I did not like him! He was yelling at me and making me so sad whenever I drove because I was driving "wrong." When I got in the car with my parents, they said I drove fine. Anyways, after 2 weeks of practicing and me having no prior experience, I had to fly to New Orleans. Before I took my flight, he & I had a driving lesson together...yet did I know, this "lesson" was going to DMV and taking the real test. I knew I wasn't ready, I felt uneasy and so nervous. Well, he decided to "test" luck and made me take the driving test without even telling me. Failed. How embarrassing. When I came back from New Orleans, I was set up to drive with him again. Still yelling..just not as much as the first time. I had prior experience this time because I drove around in New Orleans. Still sad, I told my parents I didn't want him anymore. They said unless I found someone else, I would have to stay with him. So goes on the story.. I continued to drive with him. Took a second test, failed. Again! With no more confidence in me, I returned back to school in the East Bay with no time in SF. I didn't drive again, I didn't want to use my last chance until I was really ready this time. Well, one year passes and my permit expires. There was no third chance. Coming back again from New Orleans for the summer, my mom told one of her friends about my horrible experience with T. Her friend recommended this guy named Jason Tang. Oh, how little did I know, I would love Jason! I still felt uneasy behind the wheel but I had a bit of confidence. I had to retake the written test to get a new permit. Got it. Now to take my chance with the new instructor. My mom was visiting SF, so she had a chance to talk to the instructor this time. She told him about my horrible experience with my previous instructor and told him that she worried I would never pass the test, since I didn't pass it the first two times. Jason told her not to worry, because most of his students usually pass the first time. With a little hope, my mom tried not to worry. She felt uneasy about me taking the test again though. One or two weeks into driving with Jason, I was scheduled to take my driving test. Driving experience was Jason was absolutely wonderful. He's easy-going and he's very patient. Loved him! Little did I know, he was going to change my world. I passed my driving test the first time!!! 4 errors with a comment from the grader saying "Good skills!" (This was coming from the guy who failed me the 2nd time I took my test!!) Definitely recommended! Remember to ask for Jason Tang! He also teaches stick shift lessons :) Thanks Nu World Driving School!
