Behind the Wheel may be a little more expensive than other driving schools but they are worth it!  I purchased several hours of lessons for my daughter and then right before her DMV appt another 2 hour session to make sure she was ready for the test. My older daughter took driver's ed with AAA. After that experience we tried Behind the Wheel for my son a year later. There is no comparison how much better BTW was for the same price. The BTW instructors were better. They pick your student up & drop them off at home so you don't have to sit in an office waiting. On the last lesson BTW drove with my son to the DMV where he would take his test to familiarize him with the neighborhood and prepare him for his test.  I also had no trouble getting appointments when I needed them. My first-born is learning to drive!Part I: Preparing to get one's permit! Super easy to buy the class and take the class online! It must have been an efficient course because my son passed and only missed one question: What is the fine for throwing animals out the window while driving on the freeway? (Go look it up). Because it was online it was super easy to fit in around homework and life in general. They had practice tests for him to take. He finished the course the morning of our DMV appt and wanted to print out the certificate right before I took him in - WRONG PLAN!  You must allow time for them to print and mail - or pick up in office. I agreed to use them and on 8/17 (agreed to pay $210) and they charged my cc for driving school. Then, they decided to charge me again on 9/17 and again on 10/20/17. OMG, what the heck. Thank god I reviewed my statements on time to dispute these charges. We live in Montebello and had to drive to Irvine to meet a gentleman, that told us we would have a group driving class and would be picking up other students. When we got to some locations, people refused to go with us, and said they did not know it was a group class (neither did I). This place is shady. Be-ware!!!! I chose Behind the Wheel Driving school because it was close to our house and because my brother had learned to drive there a few years earlier, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. My driving instructor was phenomenal. George Perez was incredibly helpful, patient, and encouraging. He made every lesson fun, and he helped me improve so much. The office lady called me 1-2 days in advance to remind me of my appointment, and accommodated my request of being picked up from work. Melissa was my instructor, she pointed out my problems and helped me improve. She gave me little hand-outs for tips and what to watch out for. Behind the wheel is a great driving school that should get five stars, but has a couple of employees that really drag it down. I took lessons there in a classroom and Ryan (the owner) and Mario  (one of the employees) made me feel one hundred percent prepared for my written permit test. After I got my permit however I took behind the wheel lessons from a guy named george. He was inattentive, spent at least half the lesson on his phone, and was rude and dismissive of some of my questions and requests for help. There was one point he was so distracted by his phone he instructed me to make an illegal turn. I had to point out his error and then make a very scary u-turn on a busy street to rectify his mistake. This is a great school, but if you get George for your lessons, request someone else. Read Less

My son took 5 classes with Behind the Wheel. He was very happy with both of his instructors and I was pleased with the overall experience. Michelle came to the door to introduce herself, seemed very kind and connected well with my son. I noticed after he had driven with her that there was significant improvement on his lane changing. The other instructor, Mike, addressed potential scenarios that may be tested on the behind the wheel test. My son also said he was very personable & he looked forward to the driving sessions. I would recommend Behind the Wheel to anyone wanting a well-rounded driving instruction course taught by instructors who relate well to teens. I chose this place over many others primarily because of the reviews but also because the person first answer the phone. She was very polite-but short, but also gave good information about the basics of what was offered/available.We only had six days before my daughters permit expired. We had to get six hours in and it was during Easter weekend. I purchased the six hours behind the wheel for my 16-year-old.  She took two hours Thursday afternoon two hours early Friday morning to ours Monday afternoon. She had three different male instructors. All three were super polite and accommodating and all three offered to bring my daughter home because it was on their way to their next appointment. I was very concerned with three different male instructors for different reasons. But they were respectful and knowledgeable and made my daughter feel very comfortable while learning enough whereby she passed the test on the very next day with only a few deductions. I highly recommend this driving school because they get the job done. So my daughter will continue to practice with me. I'm confident in her beginner skills as a direct result of this driving school. I signed up my first daughter at a driving school in East Torrance.  This time around, I spent extra money to have my second daughter learn from BTW, which is located near our house.  They were very accommodating with my daughter's schedule, and she had the same instructor for all three of her lessons.  Ruben was an excellent teacher, and my daughter was very comfortable during the lessons.  The last lesson, she was taken to the area near the DMV, where she will be taking her driving test.  Having her drive in the area helped familiarize her since she doesn't normally drive there.  In addition, Ruben had my daughter drive on the freeway twice.  BTW is a very professional organization, and they are responsive by phone and email.  They are excellent in calling for a lesson reminder two days before.  I highly recommend them! I signed up my 16 year old daughter for driving lessons at a place in Torrance originally, then I read the reviews.  (if you have done your research you can probably guess where; cheaper than most but not worth the trauma to your daughter to learn from someone who doesn't like females)SOOO that's how i ended up with Behind the Wheel.I walked in rather than pay online because I wanted the "feel" of them, especially since I am handing over my only daughter to a stranger, ALONE, to drive away IN A CAR with her.I cannot remember the young lady's name behind the desk but she was very informative, relaxed, friendly and polite.The first lesson was with MIKE, very successful, informative, fun and RELAXED.Seconf lesson with GEORGE, very successful lesson, informative, fun and RELAXED.Third lesson with MIKE again, and very successful.......well you get it.I would recommend this place to anyone and no they are not paying or asking me to say it.The cars are very recognizable, the instructor has a brake pedal and at the end of the 3 lessons my daughter had learned several bits of advice that will help her to not only pass her driver's test at DMV, but help her driving in general.These 3 lessons are NOT ENOUGH by themselves, you have do your "homework" driving but if the DMV requires us to have expensive driving lessons, THIS is the place.We parents and my daughter were very happy.Thank you BTW Manhattan Beach. George Perez was the BEST teacher. My mom had surgery and I needed my license ASAP.He set up a plan with me and I got my license my first try.He's very calm, funny, and patient. He explains everything very well and gives you confidence. I always felt safe when I was learning to drive and always had a good time.He knows everything you need to know for the test and you can tell that he knows what he's doing. Everyone here is very nice and incredibly knowledgeable. It's a great place to go for driving training. I thoughts the rates were sort of high, but after calling other places, they seemed to be competitively priced (give or take a couple dollars). Before my four children got their drivers licenses, they started behind the wheel lessons with Ryan at Behind The Wheel Driving School. Ryan and the staffs were extremely helpful. Especially Ryan, who always made sure everything went well for the students. My four children had a great experience with this school. There was a little problem with my youngest one when her instructor didn't give her the certificate of completion at her last lesson, which caused her to be unable to take her driving test the next day. After we reported it to Ryan, he arranged another test appointment for her immediately and 6 days later, he went the extra mile and took my daughter to her driving test at the DMV early to practice and then get the test done. He prepared her well that she passed and got her driver's license. I was so happy with Ryan that I insisted on paying him for gas. I really appreciated Ryan's help!!! Read Less

BTW did an amazing job with their understanding & kindness of my sons 3 lessons each for 2 hours. They worked around his schedules between school & his part time job.   He totally looked forward to each one.  The instructors per my son, were kind, patient and really easy to talk to after & before the lessons.  I would only recommend BTW for any new upcoming drivers.  Way better than the old drivers training that they used to have at my public high school 20+ years ago.  Great Job.  Look for many new referrals from my Family! I made arrangements for my daughter with Ryan with their most 'lovely" instructor as per my daughter's request.  Soon after I wound up in the hospital.  They scheduled my daughter to take her last lesson the day before her test.As I was still in the hospital on the day of her test, special arrangements were made for her to road-test the  course the driving test would take, with her lovely instructor.  Further through the kindness and support of Ryan, my daughter took her road test in the car she was practicing in.  Of course she passed.  I will be signing up my son as soon as he is ready.  It doesn't get better than this! Each girl had a couple of different driving instructors, and all of them were very nice, patient, and encouraging. Their friendly and relaxed attitudes helped make what could be a scary experience much more pleasant than expected. Both girls accomplished much more during their driving lessons, even the first lessons, than I would have thought possible. The schedulers were very flexible with scheduling convenient lesson times, and the instructors almost always showed up on time.
