Very disappointing. The so called instructors are NOT consistent with instructions on how to drive. We had Larry, Joe and Greg. Greg knew the most about driving and was very on point. Larry was friendly and was similar to Greg's instructions. Joe just talked MORE to me as if he wanted me happy than giving me details about driving, very silly not worth the lesson. I will not send my twins to your school next year. You should have that Marine and retired Phx person teach Joe something. Sorry I do not recall who was the marine or from Phx. Much respect to you two gentlemen. Read Less

We were so impressed with the driving instructors, and the entire staff! Our son learned so much from each instructor, and it was nice to have someone else teaching him all the rules of the road. Each instructor after his drive would write out a detailed report of specific items... I was so impressed with the time they all would take, and to give such valuable feedback was exactly what each parent wants!!! Highly recommended!!!! Read Less

I was disappointed with our experience at this school.  We purchased on of the higher priced packages for our 15 year old daughter. The classroom portion of our package was fine. Our problem was with the private driving instructors, with the exception of one instructor, Phil. Phil was professional, patient, and what you would want in someone trusted to teach your teen how to drive. However the second instructor asked my daughter what we both felt were personal questions not pertaining to the session and put her in an uncomfortable position. He also bad mouthed the previous instructor to us which we didn't appreciate. We then had a 3rd lesson with Phil who again, we found to be terrific. However our final exam was with JJ, who had negative things to say about my daughter's precious instructors. He also had a negative tone about her driving, but said he would give her a passing grade anyway. I pointed out to him that I observed that their instructors had all said bad things about each other after our sessions, and he just laughed it off. For the money we spent, I didn't  leave with a lot of confidence about what my daughter learned or really feel like I had a fair assessment of her driving skill. It was also extremely hard to schedule our sessions and felt like we got a lot of attitude over the phone. Just a recommendation to research several schools before you plop down your money. And if you do chose to go with this school, request instructors by name rather than letting them assign you to whoever is available. Read Less

My daughter took both a classroom section, and 2 behind the wheel 3 hour drives.  The classroom section was a bit boring to her as I am sure it would be to any almost 16 year old.  It was required for our insurance discount, and I also felt like it was important because it's been years since I have had to test for my license and I wanted to make sure she was actually getting correct information.  She ended up having friends in the class since most kids seem to go to this school so she was happy about that.  After you take the in class instruction you are eligible for the behind the wheel.  My daughters instructor was Joe Navarro, and he was AMAZING.  Very patient and very thorough.  He came to our home and explained everything to all three of us as far as where they would be going, what they would be working on, and when to expect them back.  He asked if there was anything specific that we wanted him to work with her on, and if there was anything specific that she was unsure of in her driving or that she just needed more practice with.  She had been driving quite a bit with me so I was curious to hear his opinion of her driving.  When they came back 3 hours later he gave me a pretty detailed list (which I appreciated) of the positives, and the things that needed improvement.  Then he gave her some homework that she should do before she takes her driving test 6 weeks away.  One thing he told me as a parent that I really appreciated was the DMV will have them pull out of the lot, and take 4 right turns, then either parallel park or do the 3 point turn.  As a parent you want to be confident that your kid can really master several different driving situations, not just go around the block and park.  I took that to heart because I want to be confident knowing that she really is a good driver before she gets that license.  I feel like Joe really cares about turning out good drivers, not just helping kids pass that test. Terrible. I have had so many problems with this place. On the rare occasion that you call the office and someone actually answers it is IMPOSSIBLE to schedule an appointment, and when they don't answer they will not call back if you leave a message. Whenever I asked questions about policies and fees I got a variety of different answers so I didn't know what to believe. The women who you speak to to schedule are insanely rude and condescending I spent $645 and ended up going on only one drive with them I was refunded only $300. Total rip off. save your money and go somewhere else. I dont even want to give them one star. Google needs to have a zero star option for places like this. The people who run this place clearly don't have any respect for your time, but are more than glad to take your money. I paid for 4 driving lessons, which had to be scheduled no sooner than 6 weeks in advance. Terribly inconvenient, since I want to get my license before a certain time. Worse still, each lesson has to be at least a week apart. Again, this is an idiotic policy, in my opinion. Less than half an hour before the first lesson, the instructor calls and cancels. Now, this place has a policy of charging a fee of $60 if you reschedule with 48 hours notice and $70 if you're a no-show. Funny, some of us have lives and shouldn't have to rearrange our lives for someone who can't bother to show up for something that was scheduled in advance. Maybe I should get $70 for my time and having to re-arrange my schedule. I have yet to hear back on having the lesson rescheduled; this is NOT promising. Read Less

I can only give this company 1 star based on their disappointing costumer service. Our daughter took the Saturday class and enjoyed it. However, when it comes to scheduling the driving sessions, a total disappointment!! Let me start by saying when I initially signed up I was clear that I wanted to get all 4 driving sessions in before May 9.  I even confirmed this in an email and was of course told it would not be a Problem. But as you might assume, it was a huge problem!! The woman who schedules offers all sorts of half truths to cover for the fact that it is a joke to schedule anything. She says 3-4 weeks out to schedule. And yet she could only offer dates 6- 7 weeks out. When I asked about why it was so difficult to get in the schedule, she said it was because I live so far away.  Well when I offered to drive in to their office and have her picked up from there - Guess what?? Still no drivers available.  Additionally, because they don't have driver's schedules beyond the 7 weeks or so, I wasn't even able to get on the schedule ahead of time. Instead she told me to keep calling back on the off chance that a driver turns in his schedule. When she finally got frustrated enough with me she offered two dates. I took them, scheduled the times and everything. 1 week before the first drive I checked the website and the dates were not listed. When I called to enquirer suddenly those dates were tentative. What??? Now there was no way to get 4 drives in before May 9th.  She was pleased and quick in giving me a refund, as I could tell from her cranky attitude that she was done with me. Thank goodness. I called another driving school, and was able to get all 4 dates scheduled. About 30 dollars more and those dates weren't perfect but at least I had options and a kind person to help me. Btw, their calendar is available at least 6+ months in advance. (Not done by one lady and a pencil).  Thank you Stop and Go Driving School! Read Less

Well let's just say this, I attended the class after I had my permit just before I was able to get my license and I enjoyed the class, it really did clear a few things up for me. Then I did my first driving outing with them from 630 to 9:30 PM. Not only was the instructor a good 30 minutes late, but he wasn't very social he didn't really talk about much he just kind of sat there. Which in some cases is good in others bad so I totally get it. Going onto the second Drive, which is now been rebooked at least three times, I decide to call again about 20 minutes ago just to make sure that the instructor isn't just late again, as he should have been here 20 minutes ago. Nope! They took me and bumped me back over three hours after when my drive was scheduled. This is now the third time that we are rescheduling a drive. As a student studying for finals, as well as working, it's not exactly easy to just take a day off. I have now missed over two days of working, to be presented with no-shows, and excuses. This is what I wanted for my birthday, this driving school to help me become a safer, better driver. This was my 16th birthday gift, this was what I wanted and let's just say this, but I am very disappointed with it. Read Less

This is the 2nd time we have used the Institute for Drivers Safety and we couldn't be more pleased!  Both our girls loved the classroom experience, even though it was a long 6 hours. They passed their permit test right after where as most kids that did not take the classroom part failed at least the 1st and/or their second/third time. The driving portion (we did 2, 3 hour sessions for each) was also enjoyable and it gave them great confidence on the road. The instructors are past police officers, love kids and do everything to make it enjoyable. They truly do it to bring safety to our young teens on the road. I also want to say that Dianna at the front desk is awesome. We had an issue with my daughter being sick and so we were hoping to switch times with someone else.  She did everything in her power to help us out. She made phone calls and was able to find a switch without a penalty. Not often do I find a company that is so accommodating. This school was recommended to me by several friends, I was impressed by how long the school has been in the valley and the expertise of the instructors. When I brought my son to the classroom I paid with my credit card and his instructor was a current Mesa police officer that explained the process of how to get the permit and how to schedule drives very thoroughly. My son also said he kept the class involved, asked everyone questions and was funny. My son went on his first drive with very little experience, we had only driven with him in a parking lot. When the instructor dropped him off at home he gave me an evaluation sheet with areas checked off that he needed to work on before the next drive and even how many hours he would need to practice to pass the road test. At the classroom we were given a log book to keep track of how much he had driven so after we practiced with him, I called in and scheduled his second drive. He passed the road test without a problem! Both the instructors were really nice and helped me understand what I needed to do as a parent to help my son learn how to drive. Read Less

Stay Away from This Driving School! This company only wants your money. Poor service with even poorer customer relations. I had enrolled by son in this school based on the other teens in my neighborhood using it. I was first concerned when I attempted to register ""on line"" and kept playing phone tag with the rude office staff. I was then told that they would appreciate ""cash"" as the first form of payment. I should have seen the light at this point, but my kid wanted to get his permit. He said that the class was okay, but the Instructor was hard to understand and mumbled his words. On his drive, the guy arrived late and said that he was having problems with the car. I asked what kind of problems as I was concerned, the car looked old and beat up. He said that it was nothing to worry about. I again said that I was concerned and he said that I could cancel the drive, but all the cars are the same and there would be a fee for cancelling. I was very reluctant, but my son was anxious. After the drive, I was told that my son was a ""bad driver"" and needed a lot of work. I said that is why he is going to your school, to be taught how to drive. Not very professional. My boy then took his next drive and seemed pretty confident, he had been doing well I thought. When he got home, I could tell he was upset. The Instructor said that he had failed the test and needed to practice at least ten hours more. Stopping and staying in his lane were the issues. I was told that I could call and schedule a retest. His father and myself practiced with him and thought that he was ready to retest. I called the school and attempted to schedule a retest. I was told by the woman answering the phone that there were ""no retests given"". I said that the Instructor said that I could call and there would be no charge. I was told very curtly that there were no retests and that I could buy another drive segment if I wanted him retested. I asked to talk to a manager and/or owner and was told that no one was available. I left my number and expected a call back. I called back at least 3 more times and each time I was told that no one was available. I found out that the owner is RANDAL ARTMAN and asked specifically for him. I was informed that he is never available. I asked that he call me, he never did. My son did get his drivers license, at the M.V.D. I have complained to the M.V.D. about the Institute for Drivers Safety and I am guessing that nothing has been done. Please take my warning with this company, there are many other driving schools out there, don't choose this one! Read Less

This was my first child to learn how to drive so needless to say I was nervous and didn't know where to begin. We started the program with the classroom instruction and my daughter took the test to get her permit. For the drives the instructor came to our house and was extremely patient with me and all the questions I had. Even after the drive he went over everything they did during the drive and how much practice time she needed. At the end of the second drive she took the driver's test to get her license. I was so happy with the range of concepts they covered, she was able to drive at night, during rush hour, downtown, and on the freeways all with an former cop. The class was way too crowded and impersonal, so much so we just stopped going after a few sessions. I guess this is the outcome of a bunch of idot cops trying to run a business... Sorry, ex-cops. Disappointing. Bought a package. I was warned that I may have to schedule the pre-paid driving lessons a few weeks in advance. Just getting them on the phone was a challenge. My first message on a Monday went ignored for two days. My second message asked that if they miss me to leave dates and times. All they did was say for me to call again and leave a number that I would answer during the day, as if we all have the luxury to sit by our phone all day and answer every call. When I finally got someone on the phone [February 11] I was told that they were already booked for the month except one time during the school day. Unless I wanted to take my child out of school there was NOTHING. Worse yet, they refused to put my child on a schedule for March. They offered a waiting list in the event of a cancellation during February. But they said to really get an appointment I had to call back at the end of the month and start again. There was no manager available to speak with, and they said that the owner does not work in the office. When registering, I was also told it would include the driving permit. Later found out it included the written test but I still had to go to MVD for the permit. Heard that they typically misrepresent that. They clearly are taking on more students than they can handle. Once the students get a permit, they want to DRIVE. It is unreasonable to expect them to wait two months. Otherwise, the parents end up doing the job they hired the school to do. I wanted my child to have the behind-the-wheel instruction prior to going on the road. Even though an adult would have to be present, we are not trained in teaching drivers safety. I have read some of the posts that you do not get what is promised, and I have to say that they need to take responsibility for over promising and under delivering, all in the name of $$$$$. In all fairness, we did use them a few years ago and had a good experience and I referred many people to them. It is a great concept if they would follow-though. Unfortunately it seems that they became popular and now their quality and integrity has suffered, so I can no longer recommend them as a good option. Read Less

We used this instructional school to supplement the training we, as parents, gave our son. He loved the fact that there was only one session (albeit, a rather long one) and then he was able to take the written test and leave with his driver's permit! His road test was done at night, and I thought this was a good idea. The traffic wasn't overly intimidating (like rush hour would've been), yet there was just enough to be challenging. Plus, driving at night was kind of a ""mini-test"" inside the road test to see how well he could do with that added challenge. Our instructor was a former police officer and had a great personality, yet he behaved most professionally during the road test. It probably helped that our son was somewhat older than the 15-year-olds that usually enroll. However, he wasn't in a big hurry to get his license so he waited until 16 1/2. Since getting his license he has had no accidents or tickets, and he is a better driver than most adults I know (including me). Our younger son is now 15 1/2 and thoroughly ready to begin driving. We WILL sign him up at the Institute for Drivers Safety. Time well spent! Read Less

Both my son and my daughter went through this program. I did a lot of initial work with them so they would be prepared and had the instructors work with them on their behind the wheel issues. There are a lot of details I didnt remember after driving so long. Like really how far away do you park from a fire hydrant anyway? Their behind the wheel instruction helped them with the mechanical issues and that was great. I was very pleased with all the information both my kids received regarding the rules of the road, laws etc. They took their classes 2 years apart, and while I am going to detail the cons below, the mechanics and instruction were very good and it reinforced much of what we were teaching them. Unfortunately one of the instructors did tell my son that its okay to drive over the speed limit so as not to impede traffic. WOW ---really, someone thinks this is a good thing to tell a young driver? Dont they know about selective hearing? For some reason the police officer that pulled him over for speeding recently didnt go along with this rationale. I have to say dealing with the office staff is the most tedious experience. They are like grumnpy old teachers who just shouldnt be in that line of work anymore. To say they lack a positive attitude is an understatement. And it was completely annoying that they told me more than THREE times that my daughter could not take her cell phone with her for the class. Seriously, I want to put her behind the wheel of a car but I cant trust her to put her phone on silent? They really need to work with their staff on positive interaction with their clients - since yes that is their revenue base and their classes are not a necessity. Read Less

As a business owner myself, it was very upsetting to be treated this unprofessionally. The scheduling of behind the wheel training began after the written permit tes. The 1st session came and went, with the trainer saying some questionable things in a ""half joking"" manner about being ""paid on the side"" to pass the student. That should have been a red flag. The 2nd session was scheduled on a specific date from 6:30 to 9:30 PM as that is all they had available for several weeks. We accepted the late schedule and rearranged our life to fit it. The trainer called at 6:30 PM (the time the training was to begin) to say he would be about 10 min late. At 7:10 PM (40 min after the scheduled time) he still wasn't at our house and this was a school night. I called him to tell him that we were concerned about the late hour, driving around Phx and having an early school day following. I was very calm and told him that we understood he was held up and we'd just reschedule. He responded by saying that we would be charged $50 for not cancelling within 48 hrs. I responded by saying we weren't cancelling, he was not able to meet the schedule and it was too late to start the training. He was not professional and would not repeat his name and repeatedly told me I would be charged. I contacted the office the next day to explain what happened and to reschedule. They would not reschedule the session until I paid this ""cancellation"" chg which I again explained to no avail. I requested the manager or owner to return my call to clear up this ridiculous communication but they never did. After paying fees and spending months with this company and my daughter was unable to finish her goal of obtaining her license, we requested our credit card company to refund the fees charge it back to the Institute. We can't recommend such a lack of professionalism and disrespect for customers over such a minor issue that could not be misconstrued as a cancellation. Read Less

I contacted driving schools throughout the valley for my daughter. From the moment one of the office staff answered the call at The Institute For Drivers Safety, I was impressed with their knowledge and professionalism. They answered alll my questions to my satisfaction and I signed my daughter up. My daughters classroom instructor was Larry F. She told me that the class went by quickly and the instructor was very knowledgeable, professional, funny and showed a true caring interest in the students so they would learn the proper way to drive and all the hazards they might expect. She was impressed that being a former police instructor he was able to relate to the younger kids today and was not demeaning in any way. She came away from the class with a new outlook and cautions of a teen driver. She hasn't driven with the instrucors in the car yet, but I expect that they will be just as proffessional. I would highly recommend this school and hopefully they will have the same great experience that I had with the staff and Larry. Read Less

After doing much research on who would offer the best instruction for my son, I can truly say The Institute For Driver's Safety is the best! I talked with friends and neighbors who had some rather poor experiences with other schools. Their children had numerous accidents and tickets after obtaining their licenses and I thought this was not going to happen to my son. When I spoke to the staff at IDS, I got the right answers. They truly care about our children. The instructors all have law enforcement background. Now who would know more about traffic than a police officer? My son attended their six hour classroom and took his permit test right there. When he got in the car with us when we picked him up, he was so excited. His watchfulness of our driving habits began right then. He has been out for his first three hour session behind the wheel and we are very happy. The time we spent with his instructor was exceptional. He explained in detail what we need to do next to prepare our son to be a safe driver and to prepare him for his next time with an officer when he will be tested for his drivers license. This experience, so far, has been very reassuring to us as parents. Driving here in the Valley is a challenge. We will continue to work at driving each day with our son and look forward to the day he obtains his license. I recommend you give them a call! Read Less

My experience at The Institute For Drivers Safety has been exceptional. We are quite saddened by the negative review of Larry, the classroom instructor. He is a wonderful instructor and taught our son so much. He is straight-forward and to the point, just what teen-agers need. His ability to load our son with so many great tips helped us, as parents, as well. We can become "" lazy drivers"". The in car instructors are absolutely great, also. The time they spent with us was, as parents, was extremely helpful. Their police background really does make a difference. My daughter just came home from the one day instruction, and she passed the written test with 100! However the so-called ""instructor"", Larry F, was completely unprofessional, and for this reason I WOULD NOT recommend this program to anyone else. He had my daugher call me at the end of the session to report that she ""was in trouble.' Now I know my daughter and she is not a troublemaker in any sense of the word in school or otherwise...she is a straight arrow! Come to find out, she had ""been talking"" once during the day to another student, and for this Larry F completely flipped out! Can you imagine a 6 or 8 hour day of instruction and not being allowed to converse, especially if you are a teenager? I absolutely will not let him be the instructor for my daughter's road experience, and in fact we are considering cancelling the check that we paid to this company today for the class. Larry F said to me that she was too immature to be driving based on the fact that she had a 20 second comment to another student after lunch! He was incredibly rude to me as a parent and disrespectful to both of us as customers in a business environment. We will be speaking directly to the company's President, Randall L Artman, and demanding a refund. Parents beware this unnecessary heavy handed approach to teaching driver eduction. Instructor egos should be kept in check and professionalism should be a primary attribute of these schools. Read Less

I went to IDS to get my license, and the experience was well worth it. The basic driver's course consists of an eight hour class, and six hours in-car driving time with an instructor. The classes may seem boring to some but they are informative and provide tips and info you can't get anywhere else - even from parents. Some of the pictures that are shown are pretty gruesome, but they are meant to scare kids away from driving under the influence, be it alcohol, or anything of the sort. Nobody wants to see that, but it's better than having your child become part of that picture. The driving portion is cut into two three hour sessions, and the instructor will pick your child up at school, work, or just about anywhere. The cars they provide aren't top-of-the-line road machines; then again, would you let your newly licensed teenager drive your nice car or one that's been around for awhile? But the cars are easy to drive and handle fine. My instructor was funny and he endeavoured to make my experience an enjoyable one. I went in with very little experience and came out more confident than ever. All in all I highly recommend IDS to anyone who wants to become a better, safer, yet more confident driver, regardless how much experience you have. Read Less

They also road tested him on the last drive so he didn't have to test at MVD. It was so simple. They took him everywhere including 4 different freeways. You first call and schedule your class times. There is a 6 hour long class that you must first attend. They verbalize the information in the book you can pick up at the DMV. Also, they show you an old drivers safety video as well as slides of dead people. The purpose of this seems to be to scare the students. After the class you can stay and take the permit test if you don't already have it. When it is your turn for your driving session an instructor will pick you up at your house and take you for a 3 hour driving ""class"". The cars are old and don't handle particularily well and the mirrors and such you must use a lever to adjust...very awkward. During my session the instructior and I barely talked, I mainly drove. He'd tell me when I was riding too far on the left of the lane and what streets I'd need to turn on but that is about it. Half way through there was a break for both my instructor and I so I drove to the school and on the way he had mw drive him to QT for some food for him. I had a 20 minute break and then he taught me to parrallel park and do 3 point turns. Afterwards I drove home where he gave my parent a report card on how well I did. I've yet to do my second drive but during it I will take the 10 minute long drivers test to determine whether or not I pass. Overall it probably wasn't the best school and they didn't teach me anything that my parents couldnt's have taught me. Besides parallel parking it was just an ex-police officer telling you where to drive to next and giving you a few helpful hints. The class was a complete was of time and made me, as a driver, less confident and scared me. Infact, the class instructor toldd one person in the class that who would never pass his test and that if he did he would end up being the type of person to get harmed in a car accident. I'd reccommend just driving a lot with your parents and other adults instead.

All I can say is that my son will be going to the Institute for Drivers Safety as well. Read Less

We are very dissapointed in the instruction our daughter recieved at this joke of an business. We were looking for supplementary education to help our new driver learn the rules of the road more thoroughly. What we got was a complete and total waste of time and money. The class was way too crowded and impersonal, so much so we just stopped going after a few sessions. I guess this is the outcome of a bunch of idot cops trying to run a business... Sorry, ex-cops. Imagine the type of people who aren't smart or personable enough to hack it as a cop (which is saying a lot) - these are the type of people you will deal with here. One of the instructors even had my daughter stop for a personal errand during one of their drives! Unblievable. Trust me, go somewere else or teach your kids on your own. I wish we had... Read Less

I have literally had to fight with them to get my childs driving appointments and when I finally got driving time they showed up late, were very unprofessional and we didn't get the full time. And then when I questioned it, they were very rude. I would not be surprised if what the other reviews said about them asking for drinks etc weren't true. They get you in by making you prepay and then make it as difficult as possible to get your money's worth. Unbelievalble!!! Read Less

Read Less

my daughter. as a 16 yr old, she was asked to reveal personal info. the theory teacher told her he would go easy on her if she bought his lunch. i am single mom making 22k per yr and this was a struggle to pay for the class. theory inst. was retired cop who told stories vs. what the laws were in az. once she took the written he announced her score to the class humiliating HER. her high school was sniped about. her eyes were never tested at the driver school. i later found out that she has (20/80) DISTANCE. when it came time for the first of two THREE HOUR DRIVING LESSONS, i later found out she drove from our apt. to the school campus where the instructor stayed for 45 minutes the second drive was only 60 min and the inst wanted her to buy him a drink at QT so he would go easy on her. she did not have the money. he had her drive from home to school where she WAITED FOR 60 MIN. then he had her drive home. the drive included undue criticizm, loud radio, and talking to her while giving her commands. there should be no distractions. i would run from this school. it was a waste of my money. my 'child' was humiliated degraded and did not receive what i paid for. i recently suggested she revisit the school. she broke down in tears and told me the above info. she did not say anything before as my income level made this a struggle and she knew this. six hours of driving means six hours of driving not break time for the inst. i will call the BBB and notify MVD. i am due a refund. my friend had a great experience in north scottsdale AT ANOTHER SCHOOL. my kid is a minority and was treated like an idiot. how would you like to drive with a new driver who had undiagnosed vision problems. yet they put her on the road. i plan to contact news agencies. i will not recommed this school TO ANYONE.

Read Less

Two years ago I signed my daughter up with Institute for Driver Safety for the instruction and to obtain her learner's permit. She then to the on road instruction and test through them. It is a nervous experience for any parent to watch a child drive off for the first time. Because of the training my daughter received through Institute for Driver Safety I have more confidence in her driving. I actually think she is a better driver than I am. At Institute for Driver Safety, they were courteous, punctual and comprehensive in their approach. I am now signing my next child up for the same course.

Read Less

He is a wonderful instructor and taught our son so much. He is straight-forward and to the point, just what teen-agers need.

Read Less

Read Less
