I got my licence late, just so you know why an adult is writing a review for a driving school. I've been meaning to write an in-depth review of this school, because that is something I wanted when I was searching for schools. I've had my N for about 5 months now, and I have had no accidents, no scrapes, no issues. I am a good, safe driver, thanks to my lessons with Rene. I chose U-Drive because unlike the other schools around here, the customer service was good from the start. Very friendly people.
The rating is high because Rene taught me everything I needed to know for the road test. I felt very prepared and that's what counts the most. The only thing on the exam that he didn't go over with me were reverse stall parks without using cars as markers. He turned me into a pro at reverse stall parks, but we never practiced using the lines as markers. You should know that the examiner will often get you to do your reverse stall park at the driving centre in empty stalls. He was very friendly and easy going, very patient while I was learning. He was also willing to teach winter driving.
I deducted 1 star, for a few reasons: Sometimes it was inconvenient for me that his lessons would run overtime so I would have to drive his other students home. He didn't have a GPS so he would read maps to figure out where to pick up some students, which would take forever. He would often talk so much about personal stories that it would interfere with my driving time.
He was positive and encouraging during my lessons, but on driving test day, he freaked me out and told me I was going to fail when I made a small mistake during our practice drive right before my test. Due to his negativity fuelling my exam phobia, I failed that test. We rebooked for my next test without any more lessons, and thankfully a power outage happened that day so I wasn't able to take it, because on the way there, he was again quite negative and mentioned I might fail!
He had told me it would take a very long time to book a driving test yourself, and that he could get me in as soon as 2 weeks away, but I dropped in that evening and there was a cancelation for the next morning. My examiner said that happens often, fyi! So I got my dad to drive with me there and I used my car.
The instructor also told me there was more risk of failing in my own car, because the examiner wouldn't be comfortable in my car since it doesn't have brakes like the driving school car does, but my examiner was very comfortable in my car. I was also more comfortable in my own car, which made passing my exam more successful. I was very prepared due to his lessons. But I have a terrible exam phobia. The only reason I passed that exam was because I was able to stay in a positive mood and didn't have him freaking me out this time. So, while he was very positive during my lessons, he was negative on the way to my road test, I guess because he wanted to be more serious on testing day, but telling someone they are going to fail right before a test is not good for people with test anxiety. All it did was waste my money to have to rebook again. He is such an easy going positive guy, I wish he would have remained positive on test days too! Read Less
